Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

I am also having the same issues and I am waiting for my bloodwork to try and find out how to fix my iron deficiency problem.

Yes. My husband has never had any history of anemia or low iron. He received the Pfizer vaccine in March. He began feeling more tired over the next two months. He saw his physician and she suspected some type of internal bleeding based on the blood test, He had an upper and lower endoscopy. No internal bleeding was found. They are going to try the camera endoscopy next week. We don't think this is going to reveal anything. His iron, ferritin and red blood cell count is extremely low. The only change in has been receiving the vaccine.

I have been seeing a hematologist after receiving blood work that was way off kilter in the red blood cell area. I have never been anemic, in fact, I am a carrier of the gene for hemochromatosis, which is high iron. I had the vaccine, had COVID, and had the booster in 2021. I went for a physical in January of 2022 with an iron count that went from 14.6 to 11.4 and a ferritin that dropped from 274 to 4. Everyone of my red blood cells were awry. Platelets almost 600 up from 230. I had an endoscopy, swallowed the pill cam, a colonoscopy, saw a gynecologist, a pulmonologist, had a CT scan with contrast and there is nothing to be found. I took iron for six months and my hemoglobin went up but my ferritin never got past 22. I went for a physical a few weeks ago and my ferritin fell again as did my hemoglobin. Iron saturation was 7 and I’m back on Integra. If there is a COVID study out there that has to do with anemia and COVID, please sign me up. I also had restless leg syndrome, and labored breathing but I never really was sick when I did have COVID . I never even coughed.
It has been an expensive and mentally exhausting year and it’s still going on.

pamarena1960 your story sounds very similar to mine, no obvious cause for the anemia, never had issues with this before, but I gave yet to see an improvement in my bloodwork. Took a polydextrose iron supplement for 6 months last year and did not see any improvement at all. My hemoglobin and ferritin have dropped significantly recently and I’m now taking a heme iron supplement. Seeing a hematologist soon, this has been going on for at least a year.

Similiar situation for me, went through upper GI and Colonoscopy, no history of anemia. Symptoms started right after second dose of Moderna, But I didn't know what was going on, I am 64, no Spring chicken. Of course, my Doctor doesn't believe in vax side effects, So I guess I dr, shop.

My levels are slowly improving. I have had 2 sets of iron infusions in the last 6 months. I am on a supplement. I have been going up over 8000 ft (I live at 4000ft) in hopes of stimulating my RBC production. I am better right now but not sure for how long.

I developed Cold Agglutinin Disease shortly after receiving Covid Booster #1.
It may be related. I have since taken Booster #2. Then I came down with Covid. The Anemia caused by CAD plus post-Covid has wiped me out. I recently had a transfusion. I have no energy. Any suggestions?

Hi ,
I also have cold Agglutinin disease.
There is a fantastic support group on Facebook for many of your questions and answers. Caddy chatter. Do you have a hematologist, oncologist you get your blood checked with regularly ? Also check your iron, ferritin . Having low hemoglobin makes you exhausted. So , there are various treat to raise your hemoglobin if your blood transfusion aren’t working. I am happy to help you find more answers to this rare disease .

Update, my ferritin level is slowly normalizing after three Moderna vaccines over the last two years with iron supplements. My pelvic ultrasound, EGD, colonoscopy, and camera endoscopy were negative and only showed mild small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (no treatment was recommended by my GI specialist or internal medicine physician), and celiac testing was negative. I questioned both of my physicians, who stated they have not had any patients report a sudden drop in iron or ferritin post-vaccination. I am a registered nurse with 26 years of experience. They both treated me like I had a third head and as if I was looking for conspiracies.
Two articles below describe a correlation between lipid microparticles and clotting. Feel free to share this with your physicians. I hope this helps you as we search for answers, information, and published research. Of course, there will be no research if we do not push the questions to stimulate the research.
Blessings and warm regards,
Kara

Upper and lower scopes were pretty much normal. Biopsy of duodenum negative for celiac. Waiting for other celiac profile labs to return but thinking they will be normal. They mentioned doing the camera capsule to see the areas not reachable with the scopes. Anyone find anything doing this? If nothing abnormal with the absorption then will continue with the oral iron for 3 months. Will recheck labs after 3 months. If not improved will start iv infusion. If absorption labs are abnormal will switch to iv sooner.
What am I missing? So tired. I know this is going to take a long time to come up.

Oral Iron supplements didn't work for me, I had two IV infusions which did work. I have my energy most of the way back now.
