Intravenous (IV) Azithromycin for MAC- Does anyone have experience?
Hello,
Does anyone have experience using IV Azithromycin for MAC? If so, can you share your experience - any issues? Stomach or otherwise?
Thank you very much!

@jgb1997 I have no experience with IV Azithromycin. By any chance did you mean IV Amikacin?

I did mean azithromycin. Thx
I had IV of azithromycin in hospital
It avoids stomach and cleared up infection without the horrible gastro side-effects.

@lp8 thank you Lorraine!
@lp8 Hello-
Just curious. Is the IV azithromycin covered by Medicare (traditional)? I also have a United Healthcare Medicare supplement so I’m curious. I tried the big 3 a few years ago and never got to the 2nd dose because my GI symptoms got so bad. I’ve been off of the meds since then. Thankfully I’ve remained stable. Been doing airway clearance (vest) and Ipratropium and 7% sodium chloride nebulizing twice daily. Also started Brinsupri for BE in March. Hoping if and when I need the big 3 I can try the IV
Thanks
I never did the big 3. I have other issues and could not tolerate them. I do percussion vest and 7% saline, 30 minutes, twice a day for years now. The ct scans dont improve or get worse. They stay steady. You can't do I unless in hospital. I only had it for 5 days. I asked if I could go to doctor to do iv. But was told that's not possible.
@positivethinking I’m sorry - I do not know the answer to “is it covered by Medicare” but hope someone else will respond.
@lp8 yes, heard it can only be administered in hospital or infusion center.
