Insider Tips for Visits to Mayo

Posted by @insidersguide in Visiting Mayo Clinic, Aug 28, 2011

I'm beginning a Discussion thread to share "insider tips" on how to navigate the Mayo system of care and organizing a visit to Rochester. I invite you to join me in sharing these tips.

A few years ago, I mentioned to our Mayo doc that coming to Rochester was like a visit to Disney don't know where to stay, where to eat, how to get the best out of the Clinic. "What patients could use is an insider's guide, like the Birnbaum guides to Disneyland and Disney World." The doc said: "Why don't you write it?" Long story short, the good folks at Mayo offered their full cooperation and I wrote the book! "The Insider's Guide to Mayo Clinic: Expert Advice for Patients and Family from the Patient's Perspective." You can find it at It's helped many hundreds of patients and family to navigate the Mayo system and make informed choices in Rochester. Especially useful for first-timers.

To your health!

If having to stay at the Mayo clinic for testing all weekend, does Mayo put you up somewhere to stay or do I need to find a place on my own and pay for it?

Hi LAL7792! You will need to find a place on your own and pay for it. Mayo does not recommend or "put up" patients and family members visiting Rochester. There are many options for lodging at a range of price points. All the best!
