Inferior Rectus Tear & Reattachment -Recovery?

Has anyone had an inferior rectus muscle tear during eye surgery and then had it surgically reattached?

I had a retinal detachment in my right eye, which was initially macula-on, and had a retinal buckle procedure. Unfortunately, during that surgery my inferior rectus muscle was accidentally torn/snapped. The surgeon was unable to locate the posterior part of the muscle at the time and only the anterior/shorter portion could be reattached.

I then had a second operation a few weeks later to remove the buckle and explore the muscle, with the aim of finding and reattaching the remaining part of the inferior rectus. They were able to reattach it.

My retina is currently flat, but I’ve been left with restricted downward movement and double vision, particularly when looking down and to the right. My primary vision is generally okay, although the diplopia fluctuates and can be worse when I’m tired, using screens for a long time, or first thing in the morning.

There has also been some thought about whether the weakness could potentially involve the inferior division of the third cranial nerve (CN III), rather than being purely mechanical from the muscle injury/re-attachment. I’m not sure whether there was any nerve injury, but I’m wondering whether this is something that can become clearer as the muscle and/or nerve recovers.

I’m now around 6 weeks on from the muscle reattachment surgery and I’m wondering how much improvement I can realistically expect over the coming months. I’m particularly worried about whether the inferior rectus will regain its strength and function after being torn and reattached, or whether the limitation and double vision can become permanent.

Has anyone else experienced an inferior rectus muscle being torn/snapped during surgery and subsequently reattached? If so, did the muscle regain strength and movement over time, and how long did it take before you noticed significant improvement in your eye movement or double vision?

And has anyone had a similar situation where a possible CN III nerve injury/palsy was considered? I’d really appreciate hearing about your recovery, particularly how your eye movement and diplopia changed over the following weeks or months.
