Types of breast reconstruction: How to choose?

Posted by user_3c9038a @user_3c9038a, Nov 24, 2015

I had a mastectomy some years ago and then an implant which now needs to be replaced. I'm trying to decide which type of reconstruction to have and would like to hear of others' experiences with various types of reconstruction, especially the DIEP flap

Hi and welcome to Connect.

Often the type of reconstruction you choose comes down to personal preference. Asking others about their experiences is a good question to post here. I'm tagging @luladavis and @smness to see if they have anything to add.

In the meantime, here is some information about the different types of reconstruction options http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/breast-reconstruction/basics/definition/prc-20020499

What type of reconstruction did you have last time? Was DIEP available then?

Am wondering where you are in this process since it has been nearly a year since your posting but will reply anyhow. I am mid-DIEP and know I have made the right decision for me. I had bilateral mastectomy March 10, 2016 with immediate reconstruction. My belly fat was transplanted to my chest. The first surgery was 8 hours with 5 weeks recovery. 2nd surgery was June 22 lasting 4 hours, 10 days recovery. The third and final surgery will be early 2017 and should be day surgery. Insurance has covered all. The final result will be natural feeling breasts and I will never need another surgery to replace anything. Also, I will never need another mammogram. There is no doubt this was the correct route for me and I would do it all over again. Good luck and God bless you. I am available if there are any questions.

I had belly fat lipo then fat inserted into damaged breat. Looks good, and NO IMPLANT.

Anyone seen on "The Dr" tv. wear they use heat to lift breast? I'm trying to find someone to do that in Southwest.
