I can describe a brand new model of sleep and arousal which can also be applied in several other areas of interest to medical research. Infant colic is one such application. Additionally a one-shot saliva test of a colicky crying babe can be employed ( not cortisol this time ) to validate what I am describing is correct . It's not rocket science, but understanding the concepts initially requires reading the following :

The Ever Present Past

Dr. Paul MacLean's triune brain theory describes a three- layered process of
encephalization ... A neocortical (neomammalian layer), which covers an
older limbic (paleomammalian) system, and which in turn is layered above
even more ancient diencephalic (reptilian) structures. Originally each of
the underlying layers controlled its own type of somatic behavior and
supporting autonomic system, but as each new layer was evolving it gradually
suppressed or inhibited full expression of the one beneath it. Nevertheless,
according to the theory, the human condition still continues to reflect the
persisting influences of its ancestral origins. In that regard, added
Maclean, we put so much emphasis on ourselves as unique creatures possessing
spoken and written languages that , like rich men denying their poor
relatives , we are loath to acknowledge our animal ancestors.

Accordingly, while recalling that Dr. Nathaniel Kleitman observed that the
trick was not to explain sleep but to explain consciousness, by applying
MacLean's triune brain theory in terms of Kleitman's observation, it becomes
possible to move human consciousness up the evolutionary ladder to its
present-day neocortical-neomammalian position on the top rung. In other
words, what we call 'sleep' must actually be comprised in what can only be
described as being older and more primitive states of ancestral

Additionally, we know that sleep reflects two distinct phases, namely NREM
sleep and REM sleep, and that the latter can be further divided into tonic
REM and phasic REM (dreaming sleep). Therefore, the question becomes one of
inquiring as to their order in ascending the evolutionary ladder of human

To address the question it may be observed that : (1) the closest phase of
sleep to complete neocortical consciousness is phasic REM (dreaming) sleep,
which (2) means that tonic REM and NREM were older predecessor/ancestral
consciousness stages, and (3) since tonic REM is absent thermoregulation,
and as Parmegianni observed 'contradicts the paradigm of homeostasis' while
NREM enhances homeostasis with only a slight decrease in thermo-sensitivity,
we can conclude (as Dr. Ruben Rial has) that the oldest state of suppressed
ancestral consciousness is now reflected by tonic REM, next oldest is NREM,
( which Rial tells us is most like reptilian consciousness ) then
phasic/dreaming REM ( MacLean’s paleomammalian / limbic consciousness), and
finally where we are to day , namely neocortical consciousness.

In other words, speaking evolutionary-wise , the oldest … what we call tonic
REM sleep… can be considered as being the predecessor of NREM sleep, and
NREM sleep then likewise as being the predecessor of phasic (dreaming) REM
sleep; and accordingly all three then as being reflective of former
ancestral evolutionary stages in the development of human consciousness .
In regard to phasic REM/dreaming sleep specifically, consideration is
requested of the following:

- The content of dreams is consistently reflective of issues, events,
persons, people, and things, which exist as unresolved concerns w.r.t their
future survival value.

- PTSD is not about the past but about the contemplation of mind’s eye
virtual imagery during present time consciousness. These virtual images are
tagged emotionally by the amygdalae , and come up for review during dreaming
sleep. The degree of emotional tagging from en passant and fleeting to daily
and habitual periods of contemplation, determines the degrees of concern
which attach thereto, and resultingly the dreams will likewise present all
the way from being short and inconsequential to being nightmarish and

- All dreams are, therefore, PTSD related, and all are about unresolved
issues w.r.t. future survival.

- Unresolved issues and emotional concerns about the uncertainty of
survival, can be shown to be directly related to the (paleomammalian) limbic
stage. The visual cortex had not as then arrived on the evolutionary ladder,
and what the ancestral creature had to depend on for its survival were
tactile, olfactory, and auditory sense data incoming from its immediate
environment . Absent visual imagery, its dependency on the then
photoreceptive ability of the pineal gland was of paramount importance.

...What we are describing then, was the ability of the conscious ancestral
animal to process and react to changes in incoming light intensity
information from the environment during its ‘subjective day’. This light
information would have been received visually and conducted down the R-H
tract via the SCN-PVN -pineal stock directly into photoreceptors in the
pineal, which would have been sensitive to changes in light intensities.

Rapid changes in light intensity would have been interpreted in terms of
flight/fight survival mechanisms. Basically it was a system of monitoring
the environment, and what the pineal most likely resembled then was
presumably not a third 'eye', but rather a primitive parallel form of a
visual cortex, functioning as an organ of vigilance and equipped to monitor
the environment in a sympathetic state of tense arousal. With the passing of
time and as encephalization proceeded, it became over-layered and
suppressed. It presents in humans to-today as phasic/dreaming REM sleep.
