I am old and crippled up

Posted by okwrangler @okwrangler, Jun 29 11:44am

I am 75. I can not sit, stand, or walk. I can not ride in a car. I can find no one NO ONE to help me. I worked all my life and ow I am crippled up and can not do anything. Doctors will not help me, the VA will not help me, Medicare will not help me, AARP will not help me. Right now I am just trying to find some organization that will help me get back up on my feet. Anybody got any ideas? Thank you for reading my gripe.

Hi @okwrangler, I add my welcome as well. It sounds like you primarily need someone in your court to help advocate for the help you need. Have you considered seeing a social worker? Social workers can be so helpful in connecting you with resources and professionals who can help.

I can not sit, stand or walk because of severe back pain. The longer I sit or stand, the more I sit or stand the more it hurts. Sorry, I have never had a brain surgery.Yes, I have seen neurosurgeon. They just won't help.I have a right leg that just seems to turn off sometimes.. This causes me to fall.

Colleen’s suggestion of speaking with a social worker could be a good first step for getting help. Call your towns Area Agency on Aging. Ask how you can connect with a social worker. Many doctor’s offices also have social workers.
I understand that you cant go anywhere and barely move about the house. Who helps you with groceries and meal preparation and keeping your space clean?

i will call social services tomorrow.  I will let you know what they say.
My wife does everything she can to help me.  Sometimes I feel like she does more than should be expected.  We have been married 54 years.
Thank you.

I did call the Oklahoma Department of Social Services this morning. The only advice they gave me was to call 9-1-1

@okwrangler. You called Social Services today and they told you to call 911.
How did you phrase your first statement to them? Did you simply say you couldn't walk, sit. stand etc., as you first told us? They may have assumed you were on the floor because you had fallen and needed 911 to send an ambulance. You need to take control of your situation and ask for what you NEED. How about calling them again and simply saying something like, "I'd like to be referred to a social worker." Then they would have something concrete to work with. Please try this, and please don't give up.
I hear you when you are so desperate for help but it's unproductive to cast out vague statements without saying strongly what you need and want. Can your wife phone for you? She might be able to be more objective when telling them of your situation and actually stating that you NEED a social worker.

I explained that what I was looking for is someone that would advise me asto how to get help and/or therapy to get back up on mt feet. They asked if I wanted to sigh up for Medicaid and I said no. Then they told me that the only advice they had for me was to call 9-1-1.

First, I was on hold  over thirty minutes before I talked to anyone.  Then I explained that I was looking for someone that would advise me as to where I can go for help and/or therapy.  Their advice was that I call 9-1-1.

Your comment from Mayo Clinic came through as only a series of letters and numbers. Can you just tell us what you were saying?
I know that this must be a very difficult time for you. I like the advice that @artist01 gave about calling and asking for a social worker to speak to and help you.
Why did you say no to Medicaid?

Okay, I actually asked jf I could get a social worker to talk to me and they said no.  They did not explain why I could not, only no.
They asked if I wanted to sign up for Medicaid to get food.  And I told them that I was not looking for food assistance or money, I just was looking for someone to help me get back up on my feet.  That is when he told me that the only advice he could give me was to call 9-1-1..
You see, my wife and I do not have a lot of money.  We paid off all our bills before we retired.  When we get our monthly Social Security checks, we have enough to live on.  We do not need food assistance or our electric bill paid (Medicaid), I am just trying to get upright and not lay in the floor all of the time. I actually enjoy working and really wanted to rebuild old cars when I retired, but that has not happened.  Sorry, too much information.
Thank you

So why not call 911? When you get to the hospital ask to talk to a Social Worker. Whenever I needed assistance in the hospital and asked to see one they came. I don’t think calling 911 is unreasonable because it seems obvious that you are in need of medical care. Tell the doctor at the Emergency Room all that you've been through. Have you ever been told by a surgeon that there was no surgery that could benefit you? All too often in the medical world doctors don’t want to do surgery on older patients, for example I have a 101 year-old friend and was she was originally told she was to old for surgery. Her daughter said “so your just going to let her die? Dying during surgery while someone is trying to save you is better than neglect. Soon she had Emergency abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery. Last week she had a pacemaker implanted and as we speak she’s in surgery having a pin put in her hip. If you and your wife aren’t able to advocate well for yourself perhaps if you have children a neighbor or close friend who could go with you and advocate for you. I believe you said you couldn’t sit or stand so tell 911 and the ambulance staff you’re on the floor and you can’t get up.
Best of luck & Blessings to you & yours,
Jake

@okwrangler you are very blessed to have such a supportive wife! When you call social services, be sure to call the office in your town, not the state. If they give you the answer to call 911, then call ! They have people who can help you up and then take you to the hospital. @jakedduck1 is very experienced in asking for their help! Slowly but surely, you are moving ahead; being an advocate for yourself.
Also Medicaid provides health insurance which you may need as you go forward.
Will you keep us informed as you work through the system??

In my area,9-1-1 does not go to a hospital, it goes to a call center where they decide on whether or not to refer it to the sheriff's office. I just do not want the sheriff involved.
Yes, I have been told that I am too old for surgery. The VA told me that they do not like to work on anyone over 65..
Thank you.
