How to prepare for a 4-year-old's echo and ECG?

Posted by lizlou131 @lizlou131, Sep 30 7:14am

We will be heading to Rochester for a week for testing for my son. I’m curious how what an echo and ECG looks like. He’s 4yo and very active so I wasn’t sure if we need to bring things to entertain him and keep him still.
I appreciate any insight with how they do with children and their child life specialist.
Thank you!

They might sedate him to keep him still for the echo. Not sure about EKG tho. Ask the staff.

Thank you! We have our Meeting tomorrow but wasn’t sure about parent experiences.

@lizlou131, you and your son are in good hands at Mayo Clinic. Mayo experts (from the front desk staff to nurses to technicians) are used to managing pediatric patients, even the active and curious kind. 🙂

An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is often done at the same time as an echocardiogram. A healthcare professional attaches sticky patches to the chest. The healthcare professional may put patches on the legs too. The patches contain sensors, called electrodes, that track the heartbeat.

Read this page from Mayo Clinic to learn more about what happens depending of the type of echocardiogram https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/echocardiogram/about/pac-20393856

Since you will be in Rochester for a week with your son, I thought you might also appreciate the tips in this related discussion:

Thank you so much for all of this information. We can start prepping about the sticky patches now.
We will be there starting Tuesday.
It’s hard to wrap my head around going somewhere that will know how to work with a very opinionated and wiggly little guy.
I will be checking out the other discussion of things to do for kids!
