Recently diagnosed with epilepsy. Can I still use a tanning bed?

Posted by @jeniyeager, Mar 4, 2016

Hi, I am a 46 year old woman who was just recently diagnosed with epilepsy. I help my BFF a lot in her Salon and she gives me free services as payment. My question is I used to tan in her beds all the time but since I’ve been sick this past year I haven’t. I know I can’t tan in the beds that have the strobe lights but is it okay to tan in the regular beds that are regular UV lights like you get from sunlight? I am thinking yes. I also think if it’s too much I can always put a towel over my face, but I would appreciate your input on this. Thanks!!

Hi @jeniyeager,
Personally, I’m not a fan of tanning beds and there’s so much evidence now showing that they can cause skin cancer. I’m not a health professional, but I would be careful about using any kind of tanning bed with the diagnosis of epilepsy. But I also know how important it is to feel good about how you look. Have you ever considered spray tans?

@roxie43 do you have any thoughts to add to this discussion?

Jeni, you may also want to connect with @TabMar and @kevinkelley on this thread https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/i-have-been-battling-with-a-seizure-disorder-since-i-was-2/ in the Brain & Nervous System group. They too live with epilepsy.
