Hi hsktuffy, just think you should know this. You might be familiar with chicken pox. Both chicken pox and shingles are caused by same virus-Herpes. The primary infection manifests as rashes, fever, we call this as chicken pox. Some of the viruses remain latent in the nerve endings to cause shingles after several years. This is characterised by painful rashes at the region of nerve distribution. Well, vaccines are available for chicken pox now thereby you can avoid the primary infection or if you get chicken pox you can tke acyclovir(an antiviral drug) with your doctor's prescription, it reduces the disease course.
