Transgender and need help finding New Endocrinologist

Posted by emil1499 @emil1499, Dec 20, 2021

Hello, I’m a transgender individual looking for a new endocrinologist at the mayo clinic in PHX. Previously, I started my medical transition with hormone replacement therapy in 2019; I did so through ASU’s on campus clinic, because at the time i was a student and on the student exclusive health insurance. I recently graduated, and have lost access to both these resources. My former endo said that to continue HRT, i was recommended to go through the mayo clinic’s transgender clinic. However, I can’t seem to find anything directly under that name on the website. I would appreciate any help, thank you.

Hi @emil1499, and welcome. Mayo Clinic has a Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic (TISCC) https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/transgender-and-intersex-specialty-care-clinic/overview/ovc-20395546

I've also added your post to the LGBTQIA Health group (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/lgbtqia-health/) to help you connect with others like @doslovesdogs21 who found LGBTQI+ friendly medical care at Mayo Clinic.

Let me know if I can help further.

Hi @emil1499 ! I see that you specifically are looking for a provider at Mayo in Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ. Unfortunately, the Mayo Clinic Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic is in MN at the main Rochester location. Endocrinology is typically the department in which hormonal therapies, including those for transgender, nonbinary, and any other LGBTIQ+ folks needing that care, are housed. There is an endocrinology department at Mayo in AZ. None of the providers are specifically listed as providing HRT for gender diverse folks, but I would think this is available. I agree with the above that reaching out to the department to schedule an appointment is a good idea. When you request the appointment, I would recommend clearly articulating that you want HRT as a transgender individual. That should filter out any providers who wouldn't be the right fit. Alternatively, are there any LGBTIQ+ support/resourcing groups in your area where you can ask for others' experience in looking for trans-competent providers who can oversee HRT for you? I know I joined a Facebook group when I first moved to the Twin Cities after college, and it was helpful when looking for inclusive providers to draw on other folks' knowledge and experience with navigating healthcare in the area.

I think this is excellent advice. I just want to gently point out that it is not ideal to refer to transgender medicine as a 'condition', as it implies that transgender and gender-diverse identities are conditions as well. I am sure it was just listed under a litany of care types that doctors provide, so I understand there was absolutely no ill intent on your part! I apologize that this is a public reply, but I thought others may also need to hear this.

Hi Sophie, thank you. Words matter and your guidance is helpful. The Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinics in Minnesota and Florida are listed as Specialty Groups on Mayo's Endocrinology page. I have corrected the post above and linked to the specialty groups. https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/endocrinology/sections/specialty-groups/orc-20392508

How are you doing?

Thank you so much @colleenyoung ! I am doing relatively well; just trying to absorb a lot of information about my body/health and trying to give myself grace (which is not really my strong suit!). I hope you are well!
