Has anyone experienced hyper-extension after total knee replacement.

Posted by zaydez @zaydez, Dec 20, 2025

I had TKR 15 months ago. Lots of PT and strength training. I still have hyper extension of the knee. I am considering revision surgery. Walking with rotator and cane. Very unstable knee.
Any suggestions?

I have had the same issue~also did plenty of PT and strengthening- my left knee has been revised with a constrained implant and after a year it seems to be successful. My right knee which was revised due to infection will likely need the same as it hyperextends and slips inwardly. I have been told it is my make up and my ligaments tend to stretch out! Anecdotally, I do remember as a kid that I tended to stand with some degree of hyper extension always. I really don’t want to have to wear a brace or use a walking aid for the rest of my life after going through all this but I guess there are worse things in life 🙃

I just got fitted for a new brace and it helps a lot. More stable and prevents the hyper extension. I will check out revision surgery in February.
