Has anyone experienced a condition called Globus pharyngeus?

Posted by maku @maku, Dec 31, 2025

I choked on a sunflower seed about two weeks ago. Of course I coughed and coughed and ended up with what felt like a lump in my throat. Ended up at ER-had MRI that showed nothing. Doc gave me liquid prednisone which helped a bit but today it’s back to the way it was. Only drinking ice water everything else irritates my throat

Anyone experience this?

I experienced that once. Like I couldn’t swallow down whatever it was. My doctor must have know me well. He suggested “globes hystericus”. A term no longer used but still Google-able. I WAS feeling very anxious. It went away later that day, never to return. There was nothing in throat.. I don’t know what I believe.

@hopeseeker22 I’ve had this for two weeks. The only thing helping right now is crushed ice and sipping on water. My regular doc gave me Lorazepam for the anxiety which really helps. I hate that panicky feeling struggling to swallow. I have an appointment with Gastroenterologist but not til mid February. Thanks for your answer.

@maku Ouch! So sorry. I took rather large tablets once, and they could be CRUSHED, one at a time, say between two spoons, and mixed with applesauce or pudding. Amazon sells actual pill crushers they day will reduce tablets (not enteric coated or capsules - which I guess can be pulled apart, but don’t try to crush what comes out)- The pics of Lorazapran I looked at seemed scored. So maybe crushed well - almost to powder. NOTE:,The warning on the add in Amazon said that crushing certain tablets will reduce their efficacy. Maybe a pharmacist would know. Have you been administered the “swallow test”? It would help alert a person if he/she might risk ASPIRATING liquids or food. Something no one needs. Good luck?

@hopeseeker22 Thank you so much for your reply and information. The Lorazepam I take is a very small pill that melts under my tongue.

I didn’t know that. Is it still hard to get down that way?

No not at all-quite easy.
