Glucosamine/Condroitin Side effects/

I started on glucosamine/condroitin with MSM a week ago. This is the first time I've taken this supplement. I am also taking turmeric although I use turmeric as a spice frequently enough that I may not have needed the supplement. These were recommended by the medical provider I saw at Mayo Clinic in Orthopedics for a shoulder injury/inflammation. I have other things I am doing for my shoulder including at-home exercises, PT, massage, and icing my shoulder.

Last night and in the early morning hours when I was asleep in bed I was awakened with two separate painful muscle spasms in one calf and then the other. I haven't changed anything else in my diet, supplements, medication or exercise. I'm not even taking the full dose of the supplement yet. I cannot find anything online at reliable and valid websites about muscle cramps occurring with glucosamine/condroitin with MSM.

Anyone else had these muscle cramps and think they be due to glucosamine/condroitin with MSM?

I’ve read that the amount of turmeric needed for inflammation is pretty high, more than just using it as a spice. I do like it tho, especially in eggs or tofu. It gives it a warm taste.

My brother was taking this combo of anti inflammatory OTCs a bunch of years back. They acted negatively with my ACE inhibitor for hypertension and it stopped the drug from working. And this followed through to all NSAID drugs so I cannot take them any longer. For inflammation I depend on turmeric 1500mg/day, an anti inflammatory diet and cannabis, which has been found to have anti inflammation effects.

I took glucosomine condroitin for years (25-30) and no other anti-inflammatory. I'm fairly sure it caused my chronic kidney disease in these my later years. My doctor absolutely advises against anti-inflammatories now. The same happened with a friend who took diclofenec for years.

@thayern , are you saying that glucosamine/chondrotin attributed to kidney disease? Confused, after you mentioned diclofenec. Thanks.

I think so. From what I read and hear from my doctor, anti-inflammatories taken over a long period can damage kidneys. Diclofenec, another anti-inflammatory, was taken by my friend over many years, and she too now has the same loss of kidney function as I. Our doctors have both advised strongly against any more anti-inflammatories.

The most frequent side effect for chondroitin/ glucasamine seems to be GI intolerance to the glucosamine. Have not heard about muscle spasms. I get “wake me up” muscle spasms when I eat too much sugar, get dehydrated, or sit too much.

Many brands of Glucosamine+Chondroitin contain shellfish, which cause problems for some people. However, there are some brands that don't have shellfish as an ingredient. I found those are as effective and are without side effects for me. So I'm now certain to carefully check the ingredient list before purchasing!

@deanna2
Do you know of a brand that does not contain shellfish? I have been looking.

@rjohns58 I found WELLNESS LABSRX Vegan Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM on Amazon, but I now noticed that brand is "currently unavailable" there." However, they also have many other brands. Search for "glucosamine chondroitin shellfish free" and to be certain, of course check the ingredient list of the product before ordering. Best wishes.
