Fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair

Posted by 1975 @1975, 2 days ago

Hi, I had a fundoplication and hiatal hernia surgery 2 years ago. Since then I’ve been unable to eat and I get my calories from eating ice cream. I occasionally have a filet of boiled soft fish but anything else I.e. meat, bread I find very difficult to swallow, ending up were I have to physically bring it back up from the back of my throat. It’s never gone passed the back of my throat. I can’t vomit but burping is horrifying. I was on the table for over 5 hrs and had it done laparoscopically. I don’t know if this is the norm or not. Can anyone offer any advice?

1975, Hey there. My mom had hiatal hernia repair done back in the late 1970's and she was never able to throw
up again. She could eat whatever she wanted though without choking anymore.

I would make an appointment with the surgeon who did the surgery and see if there is something
to correct this. This is horrible for you I am sure.

Praying for you. Happy Thanksgiving.

My partner suffers similarly. He didnt know they were going to do the fundoplication. His Gerd was long resolved. 1 post op test 1 yr later reveals its too tight, endoflip test or endoscopy should let Drs if this is the case. His insurance won't pay for endoflip so he is doing endoscopy, almost the same. He struggles to do anything ( which is hard on me!!) because he eats then has horrendous nausea for many hours. He too eats much ice -cream . Try smoothies, Greek yogurt etc. Ice cream of course nt too good for you. We have had to fight all the way...once surgery over Drs dont want to know about problems, sadly. Gd luck!

1975, a gastroenterologist could dilate your esophagus. It is a quick easy procedure that might help, you'd have to be sedated, though. And it might not resolve your trouble. Revision surgery for Nissen Fundoplication is a demanding surgery that requires skill that you'd want a specialist in revision to address.
You might ask advice from https://houstonheartburn.com/question-of-the-week-revision-nissen-fundoplication-options-and-outcomes/
Best luck
