Fosomax risks for teeth problems and femur fracture
Last week My rheumatologist put me on 70mg fosomax after my 2 years of Tymlos finished . I took the first weekly tablet .
My dexa scan is not that bad ( spine -3.2, hip -2.5) the TBS score was pretty good 1.3.
Can anyone comment on the seriousness of my osteoporosis? And my dr suggestion that I take a bisphosphonate?

A bisphosphonate is recommended after completing anabolic therapy, to preserve the bone your body built during your Tymlos treatment. Reclast is typically used but some doctors prescribe Fosamax instead.
Doctor typically monitor bone density and CTX to ensure you are not losing too much bone during the years after your treatment.
Risk of atypical femur fracture and osteonecrosis goes up the longer you are on a bisphosphonate. The doctor will likely not keep you on Fosamax for more than a few years before having you stop the bisphosphonate for a year to give you a break.

1 ReactionAlso - if anyone has knowledge about the femur fracture risk
And the dental risks from fosomax id like to know the odds of these side effects IF someone takes fosomax LESS than 2 years . What if I only take fosomax for one year ? Can feel
Sure I won’t get those serious side effects ? ( teeth/jaw problems and broken femur)
There is an excellent YouTube video regarding dental care and Osteoporosis on Osteoporosis Canada:

2 Reactions@2024tymloshelp I did some research a while back but could not find definitive numbers on the overall risk. Anecdotal data from people posting online here and elsewhere showed that many had been on a bisphosphonate like Fosamax for many years before suffering a femur fracture.
Google Gemini says the likelihood of either is very low for the first three years but increases the longer you are on it.
When I was started on it in 2018 by my PCP, I was told I’d be on it for up to 5 years. I had reached the 5 year mark and had to follow up with my doctor to inquire if I should come off it. She was not monitoring me closely at all. Since then I’ve learned that it’s best to have a specialist involved in your care.
I believe the recommendation is to take a holiday after 3 years now.
Incidentally, I had a vertebral compression fracture after being on Fosamax for five years even though my lumbar T-score was -2.2. I’ve always wondered if I was on Fosamax for too long, causing my vertebrae to become brittle.
My endocrinologist says no and that the Fosamax had simply stopped working as my DEXA scores started to deteriorate after three years of treatment. Since I wasn’t being closely monitored during that five years, e.g., CTX levels, it’s hard to say if that’s true.

1 ReactionThank you so much for posting this video . I feel much more at ease about that risk of taking fosomax . Now I need to reassure myself about the femur fracture risk ……
