Forgetfulness

Posted by Eightieschild @pamelacelia, Dec 28, 2016

Hello, my dad is 62 years old, for years he has complained about having headaches, he doesn't like going to the Doctor however, a couple years ago he got sick and was diagnosed with pneumonia, while at hospital the doctor gave him an appointment for a CT scan to see if they can find out the cause of the headaches, when the appointment came around though he was sick again and missed the appointment, he never had the CT done, a few weeks ago my mother told me that he's forgetting stuff, like he'll tell her something and come back and tell her the same thing again later or the next day, and he's forgetting other things like where he put something, she called me again tonight and said she wanted to get him something to use, like a vitamin maybe to see if it will help. Has anyone had a similar experience or have any idea what could be going on?

Hi @pamelacelia and welcome to Mayo Connect! We are glad that you have joined us. Since your dad has had headaches, it is probably best that you keep trying to get him in for the CT scan or perhaps a neurologist appointment. Neurologists are the best docs to diagnose both memory and headache problems. Is your dad having any other problems, like falling, balance, or gait problems? We wish you well as you help your mom search for answers. Keep in touch, we care!

He needs an MRI. It could be a brain tumor or any number of things

Yes, @sandydominy1, an MRI is a better choice. @pamelacelia a Neurologist would probably order an MRI given your dad's symptoms. At 62, he should try to get a diagnosis, this might be easily treated if the cause is known.

An MRI is expensive here, but if it has to be done we'll have to do it, thanks for the suggestions and advice.

No he doesn't have any of those issues, it's just the really bad headaches and the forgetfulness

@pamelacelia Be encouraged as you look for answers, the bad headaches and forgetfulness point to a need to take a closer look. It is good to hear that he doesn't have the other problems like falling, foot-dropping, etc. That is good news for sure. Best wishes to you and your family and Happy New Year. Teresa
