Finding The Right Doctor

Posted by @calboyjones, Aug 8, 2011

I was resently diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. I live in Shreveport, La. and am looking for a doctor who knows this disease well. I am also looking for information about the best treatment options. From what I have read it is best to have a thymectomy as soon as possible after diagnosis. I am not sure if this is good information or not? I am also looking for information about doctors and hospitals that perform thymectomy surgeries as it is my feeling that a doctor that performs thymectomy surgeries for Myasthenia Gravis often would know better how to perform the surgery.  Can someone provide any of this information or point me in the right direction ?

Hi. I’ve been living with MG for 6 years now. I’m looking to come to the Mayo Clinic in AZ to have the non-invasive thymectomy done. From what I understand, notwithstanding having a tumor on your thymus, there is a 50/50 chance the surgery will sucessfully result in a remission of symptoms.
I know there is a hospital in atlanta that performs the surgery using robotics. I’ll post a link when I find it. The traditional way of having a thymectomy done is going in through the chest. I personally dont want to go that route if I can avoid it.
There are two MG community pages on facebook that are very active. You can learn a lot through other people sharing their stories:!/groups/6126913853/

I suggest looking for a neurologist who is familar with the disease and actively treating other MG patients. Its important to find a neuro who you feel comfortable with and who is committed to finding the course of treatment that works best for you! This disease affects everyone differently. Best of luck to you!
