End of Tymlos treatment

Posted by idapa @idapa, Aug 13 10:56pm

I have been on Tymlos for 18 months, I’m at the end. my dr says I’m on a drug holiday till July 27. I never heard that before, I thought I was to transition to another to bind my gains. I’m afraid. Any feenback?

I haven’t heard of a “drug holiday” for Tymlos. Doesn’t mean that a pause between transitioning to a “maintenance drug” like reclast, Prolia, fosamax, etc. depending on your particular situation isn’t called for. I would like to hear what your doctor says. Hopefully not using that term generally reserved for bisphosanates like reclast or fosamax because those drugs stay in your system for a long time after discontinuing them.

@osteopatient2026 I would definitely question that further, as Tymlos followed by a bisphosphonate or sometimes Evenity for a year first, in order to lock in the games. The only question is do you wait one week or one month, but you don't just walk away from it or you'll lose gains. If doctor won't elaborate on your specifics, I would try to get a second opinion asap.

In ending Tymlos next month after 2 years . I would love to stop all meds but I know I’ll have to Do something to maintain any gain I’ve had.
What is the latest thinking about actonel ? Seems like the side effects from actonel might not be as bad as reclast , fosomax, polia?

You'll need to have a bone protection medication preferably within a few weeks of ending Tymlos or you'll start losing the gains of Tymlos. For Forteo, which has a lot in common with Tymlos, I believe you'd lose practically every gains withing a year...

@2024tymloshelp You're assuming you're going to have side effects. Most people do not. You'll read "Fosamax causes your jaw to break down! Don't take it!!" Then, when you read the actual facts, you discover that there is a higher risk of that in people who have been taking Fosamax for five years or more, and that the risk is low in any case.

Don't you have an appointment with your doctor to discuss next steps?

Yes I have an appt with the rheumatologist who put me on Tymlos but I don’t think
She has any strong opinions on anything and she’s never tested my bone markers . 🫤

I must say I think most of these doctors ( I also saw an endocrinologist) really don’t know what’s best . The endocrinologist said I should go on prolia but I’m
Only 65!

Thank you to all that replied. I am really worried I am going to lose everything. I am seeking a second opinion although I really like this dr, but have real concerns. I was worried sick going in to appt for decision on a rely drug, and when he said drug holiday I was shocked ! My spine dexa went from -3.3 to -2.1. Incredible gains! I was on Tymlos for 2 yrs.

@idapa
Perhaps your doc used the term ‘drug holiday’ to infer the time between ending the Tymlos and starting a bone maintenance drug?
