Difficulty initiating swallow

Posted by @mdawn in Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat, Jun 14, 2012

Hello,
I am new on the forum and considering a trip to Mayo for answers. I have had trouble swallowing for almost 4 years, and I have had so many tests, but nothing that can diagnose my issue. I have trouble initiating swallows, whether it be solids or liquids. It has become life consuming and I am desperate for answers. It's been long enough and I hope that Mayo, being a specialty hospital, can finally give me answers and hopefully, fix me. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what was your diagnosis?

I have Barrett's Esophagus and often have trouble swallowing. I Aldiss have a voice problem that no one can diagnose. No one has helped me yet. I wish I had more to offer. I am considering Mayo Clinic to get some answers.

My swallowing issues are to the point where I will probably have to have a stomach feeding tube to survive. Oral cancer of the tongue twice (1998&2010), loss of my right mandible, numerous surgeries, and radiation treatments have left me with a painful neck and throat that feels like petrified wood, a larynx/epiglottis that won't block my airway when I swallow, and chronic pneumonia from food/bacteria entering my lungs. I go to Mayo Jax for ENT cancer follow-ups, pulmonary etc., and receive xcellent care. No knowing what causes your swallowing problems, I can't advise you, but I'm sure Mayo can. I have had 2 swallow studies done there where you swallow barium liquid and other food consistencies, and they watch your swallow mechanisms on ultrasound then render an evaluation. You may already be familiar with that. Mayo always seems up on the latest techniques and procedures so, if you have access, I highly recommend them. Good luck!

Thank you for your response. I don't have cancer and I've had a swallowing test, thyroid tests, biopsies, etc. I am going to the University of Miami Clinical Research Building this month to see new doctors who specialize in this. Mayo doesn't take Medicare and I would have to pay up front. So I thought I would give Miami a try first. It's the hoarseness that is the problem. I have no pain, but swallowing doesn't always work well.

Be that as it may, I will pray for your recovery. God bless.

Took radiation and kemo they told him its not like old school and would't b so bad He was a healthy 72 yr old , it burnt his throat so bad he now can only eat thru a tube to stomach. He cant even keep that down and loosing weight fast. They told him theres no cure for his throat ,,so now hes starving to death. He cud have lived with lung cancer longer then with this treatment. We are so upset to b loosing him over this..we want all to know to do reserch before just listening to a doctor. DONT CHOOSE OLD SCHOOL RADIATION..IT WILL KILL U FASTER THEN THE CANCER..Need a prayer and a cure for a burnt throat from radiation

Thank you. I don’t have cancer. I’ve had all kinds of swallowing tests. Nobody can come up with anything including the doctors at Miami University Hospital. A friend told me to squirt flaxseed oil down my throat. I will certainly give that a try. Praise God I don’t have cancer. I will pray for your brother. Please send me his name.

Hi-Haven't been on this blog for awhile but your comments on your brother's condition popped up on my Email. I'm on oral cancer #3 and declined further radiation 1/2014 at Mayo because more damage wasn't what I needed. Finally lost my swallow completely after many lung infections/pneumonia from ingested food. and now feed by G-tube. I must have missed something but how did your brother have a "spot on his lung", and the radiation treatment for it "burned his throat"? I know radiation has a field of effect, but that's quite a stretch. The only thing I can offer is that i have been tube fed for 18 months now, and the only problem is I keep GAINING weight. If your brother has access to a good nutritionist, perhaps they could find a liquid supplement that he could keep down. When I declined further radiation, they gave me 3-5 months and I'm still here, so you and your Bro hang in there.

They put im in the chamber and it burnt his esophagus ,They say it will never heal. He was very active before all this. I mean my brother could still climb trees. Its hard for him to b in a hospice hosp just waiting to die. I live 3 hrs from him and he only has 1 good son who has a family to care for too. He lives in River View Fl if anyone knows of any help there?

I am sorry for your condition but don't believe Mayo has the cure all, actually I've found out several times it's the other way around.
All I can say is I would stay away from Mayo when it concerns Ear, Nose and Throat issues. And actually other issues as well. Doctors talk a big game but end up making your problems worse. I went there for basically a deviated septum and after getting involved with two of the the supposedly best doctors in Jacksonville came out not being able to beathe out of one side of my nose, they collapsed my nasal valve, do not want to take any responsibility for it and it just cost me over $12,000 out of my pocket just to be able to breathe again, so that I'm not gasping for air.
