Denied appt. after referral to Mayo

Posted by @bipchop in Visiting Mayo Clinic, Sep 28, 2011

My Urologist officially referred me to Mayo since my condition is "out of his capability." All paperwork and records were sent. I was told by my primary doc that "there is no chance of you being denied since we are directly referring you." Correction......I received a letter of denial from Mayo 3 days ago. I was shocked and so was my physician. If Mayo won't help me.......what other medical facility in the country WILL? My physical health is starting to affect my mental health now and a big factor to that happening is being denied by Mayo - who've I always considered the best as they helped my aunt with Uteran Cancer. I'm a single mother of 3 boys who has GOOD, private insurance. Is there anyway to file an appeal to this decision?? Thank you!

Hi, I don't have any info for you an filing an appeal, but I can empathize with you. I asked for a second opinion on a serious back problem and I got rejected after doing everything you did as well - except I didn't do the physician referral. I felt the same way, depressed, a bit hopeless, and wondering what the motives were for Mayo. Hopefully it's not the case, but it makes me wonder if they didn't want to damage their care ratings because my case is complicated, or if I didn't look wealthy enough to be a patient there. Did you feel that way too? So sorry this happened to you. If you're in Minnesota, I highly recommend the University of MN. They have excellent urologists and do cutting edge research, and they don't turn away patients. Good luck.....message me if you want more information.

Hi sorry about your troubles
I just did a quick search on US News and World report maybe Mayo clinic may be not your best choice for your problem. In fact they may be 3rd. Here is the LInk http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings/urology
If link dose not work do a search on( US News and World Report Health)

I have read about Mayo not letting people make an appointment on other web sites ( I have never been to Mayo with out an appointment so I am going by what I read I have no first hand knowledge of just going). If you are hell bent on going to Mayo then just go without an appointment. I have read of people who have done that. They have to see you. You will probably have to wait longer to see someone but they have to see you. this is from Mayo's own web site

Can I get into Mayo Clinic without an appointment?
If you choose to come and wait on site for an appointment opening, we will make every effort to see you. But you may have to wait for several days or a week or longer, depending on the number of appointment cancellations and the number of other people waiting for an appointment. Waiting time tends to be shorter in winter in Rochester.

If you are ill, ask to be seen immediately. A Mayo doctor will talk with you to evaluate the severity of your illness. The doctor's recommendation will determine how soon and in which area you will be scheduled for an appointment.
