Covid Vaccine & BCG TREATMENTS

Posted by glgraham @glgraham, Feb 6 10:33am

In active “BCG” Immune therapy. Keep getting conflicting options on should or can’t get the Covid Vaccine while in active treatment. Any input appreciated… Considering many of the “underlying” issues , COPD , Type 2 diabetes, Postrate cancer, Heart disease, Obesity…”I’m so confused”…lol

@glgraham Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. We are patients, family members and caregivers here, sharing our journeys and offering support as we all travel our different paths.

There seems to be many opinions on getting vaccines, especially with underlying health conditions. Personally, since your medical team knows you and your particular situation best, I would defer to what they may tell you. If you are getting two differing thoughts from them, ask why this one told you "yes" and that one told you "no". Being informed as to why they think a certain way may help you make the decision.

In my situation, my oncologist told me to get the vaccine ASAP, however you can, so we can start treatment for multiple myeloma. My second dose is in one week, and treatment starts in early March. We deliberately held off from starting in December, so I could get the two doses in.

How are you tolerating the BCG treatments?

I "thought" it wuz' going ok. After the first treatment I really had no issues other than "what's expected" . Discomfort, alittle "tainted" urine & urgency.. However, after the 2nd , it wuz' as the first until, the day before the 3rd . Started passing ALOT of clots & REALLY dark brownish/ red . Went for CT (no results as yet) & after discussing w/tech. suspended 3rd treatment until she could consult w/ MD's… Expecting call on Monday on outcome. Now, everything is bac' ta' "Normal" & NO clothing or dis'coloration…So weird…!

@glgraham I have no experience with BCG treatments
Here is an article I did find about BCG treatments on the Mayo Clinic site https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/bacillus-of-calmette-and-guerin-vaccine-live-intravesical-route/description/drg-20062163 that indicates you should not have any vaccine while under treatment.

@parus had BCG treatments last year, and may be able to offer you some insight as to the treatments' after effects.

Useful info as my husband is undergoing BCG treatments. Particularly no vaccinations. Thinking about covid vaccine. Although, with the slow programme rollout up here in Canada, looks like that won't be a concern.
