COPD and swallowing

Just curious if anyone has trouble swallowing, or feel fuller when eating with COPD?

I definitely feel fuller after eating about half of what I used to eat. Probably why I've lost so much weight - at least 10 pounds this year.

I have difficulty swallowing when I eat and much fuller, to the point I cannot move my diaphragm enough for a full breathe cycle. I did some research and found studies that claimed certain carbohydrates can produce more co2 in COPD patients causing breathing difficulties. Don’t know how accurate the study is but I try and limit portions of pasta and potatoes. Seems to help.

I don't feel full and have not lost weight since COPD; gained itstead as with the progress of the disease my activity level diminishes and so I'm home more and therefore I eat more!🤨. However, occasionally when I take a first bite, typically of bread or sandwich on bread, I feel like I've aspirated -- "food went down the wrong pipe" as we used to describe it. And I feel like I'm choking. I have to go to the toilet and force myself to throw up. Once I've done that, I'm fine, and I eat normally. No explanation for this from my doc.

I recently read an article about this very thing,as I was experiencing swallowing difficulties, like you with bread and pasta. This article listed many causes but boils down to the muscles of swallowing are weakened because of copd, we cannot fully empty our lungs and that makes swallowing more difficult. It was suggested that those experiencing this get a referral to a speech therapist to learn how to cope with this. Sadly, I have discovered over 10 years with this disease, doctors don’t really know much about living with it…well a few do but that is rare. Hope you find a solution and if you do let us know!
