chronic constipation

Posted by Manierob @manierob, Sep 11, 2012

I have had this problem for 20 years. I would like to hear any remedies that have worked for other members. I found a great product{ULTIMATE COLON CARE} from a brochure I received in the mail. It worked great, but, had an ingredient, (LICORICE ROOT), THAT affected my BP. So, I am back to square one. Looking for another great product. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am a huge fan of Miralax. It does not absorb into the body- just goes thru you and draws water into the Colon. It takes a couple days to work, so you need to keep taking it. Some have to take it once a day, some twice a day. it is over the counter, but it’s cheaper by prescription because you can get it in generic that way- plus insurance will cover it.

Thanks, mouser, I’ve tried miralax. It doesn’t give me a solid stool, more, stringer, plops.

I also suffer from constipation, and what I have found that helps me the most is drinking green tea, drinking lots of water, eating oatmeal and walking at least one mile every day. I hope this helps you.

Hi
You might consider trying psyllium husks (I use the YerbaPrima brand — from Whole Foods)…start in taking 1 tblspn at night with at least 6 oz of water… and make SURE you drink at least 32 oz of water a day…(other liquids don’t count! 🙂 Exercise is really important…a good walk will do it!
I know this is an old question — but are you getting enough fiber? Veg, fruit, etc etc … just bread and meat can be a stopper upper.
Good luck!

Good Morning:
I know how uncomfortable constipation can be. I’ve had it all my life but it got much worse after taking pain medication for chronic pain. The Dr. prescribed some kind of sweet syrupy liquid which helped but after awhile it didn’t work for me. For many years I’ve taken Senna-S which is wonderful for constipation but I had one too many bouts of diverticulitis so ask my pharmicist and she recommended GaviLax to put into juice, etc. There’s no taste to it so water would be fine.
This medicine is easy on the GI track. Hope this helps for you.

Hi! I have tried drinking a glass of warm water every morning when I woke up. I also mixed with fiber powder when needed. Just before breakfast, I ate a banana. I started eating foods with high fiber and have been drinking plenty of water. It works. Have a good GI doctor will also help. Keep trying.

I also have occasional constipation. Exercise, 8 glasses of water and fiber are all good but they don’t always work well. I drink prune juice. Usually one glass will work. Fresh is better than reconstituted. It also causes a lot of gas. It’s also good for sneezing; drink 2 glasses and you wont dare sneeze.
Here in Los Angeles we have 99Cent stores where they sell a quart for 99 cents which is half the price in supper markets. Sometimes when it sits around it can get real POTENT, must be some little bugs get in there and up the ante.

Probiotics are key from what I’m finding. So many of us had been sick while young and the antibiotics have caused us to have problems with the good bacteria that helps things move along. Exercise and lots of water is key as well. My problem is Irritable Bowel but more on the constipation side. If you find something else that works, please share.

Magnesium is known to help with constipation as well. There is a product called, Calm. It is a powdered magnesium that you mix in water or other liquid. It is available in health food stores or online, that can be effective for some people. Taking it at night is best. You can buy it flavored, but I prefer the plain variety.

I appreciate your post about meds and constipation. Very often meds which are very helpful to treat depression/anxiety can result in chronic constipation. I recently took Gabapentin for nerve pain (a/k/a Neurontin) which had a similar side effect of constipation.

I can appreciate all you are doing and it all sounds good. Have you ever tried flaxseed oil capsules and/or fish oil capsules? Some people have good results with those types of oils (they are also good for providing those great Omega 3s that we all need as we age).

Some juices work very well. If you have a juicer at home, you could try making carrot juice (or buy it at a store).

I often mix Miralax with juice (cranberry is good, but I've also used vegetable juices of different varieties).

It can be difficult finding just the right combination of foods/liquids to master this problem. If the weather permits, a short walk after each meal is a good idea or try some exercises that can be found on Youtube.

Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing with this. Sharing ideas is a great way to get some control over constipation.

My GI doc's nurse also suggested "Smooth Move" tea. You can find it in health food stores. It is also very helpful.

Flax seed may be the answer. Grind in a coffee grinder as skin is not digestable. Start with one table spoon, and use on cereal. Reserve grinder for flax only. This will also give you omega 3s.
