Chest pain, thoracic pain, intermittent

Posted by @brigby, Fri, Nov 16 2:53pm

Hello everyone,

I am curious about how much deep chest and/or upper back pain everyone experiences, and if you notice it increases with an exacerbation? I have it nearly all the time now, but other wise I am relatively asymptomatic. I reported it to my pulmo at Stanford, and she dismissed it. My CT scan in June showed improvement. We are not treating with the big 3, even though now I have NTM abscessus in my lungs in addition to MAC, and all kinds of lovely infections (MRSA, m. Abscessus, acintobacter Baumanii) in my sinuses. How many of you have nagging chest and back pain?

@brigby I have Bronchiectasis and MAC, diagnosed in Feb. My chest and thoracic area hurt/ache whenever I recline too long on my back, like watching tv laying on my couch. I already have DDD issues so I can't speak to back pain caused by lung disease. It's pretty uncomfortable tho.

@margiebanks I have DDD as well…one of the “in common” symptoms for many of us. Thanks for your thoughts. Never knonif I just need it rest more, or go exercise more to relieve the pains!

@brigby I experience the same chest pain and sometimes upper back pain. But I have a cavity and it usually hurts where the cavity is and worse with exacerbation. Sometimes tightness and a deep pain…

@amn17 thank you for your post. I often feel the sharp pains in the exact same place over and over, and it happens to be where the CT shows the worst damage: base of my left lobe. Just trying to determine if it’s a symptom to which I should pay attention. Anyone else’s have kind of a acid reflux feeling and constant need to clear throat of thin bits of phlegm? I have GERD, but it feels like it’s in my trachea?

@brigby I have Gerd as well and It's always felt like coldness in my trachea and throat and windpipe.

I also have almost constant chest pain. My back has started about a month ago.

@brigby…I was able to stop the acid reflux from causing more damage by treating GERD very seriously. It damaged my voicebox and lungs. I follow a strict diet with no foods lower than pH5.But the most effective adaptation I follow is to sleep upright in a recliner. No more lying down.I also have acupuncture treatments which have almost eliminated the sharp pains.

@egayle187 hi there, thank you for the tips. Just wish we knew if the pains & the burning/need to swallow frequently are a warning sign lungs are being damaged further?

@brigby.. Only a bronchoscopy can tell. My lungs were completely filled with mucus and tested positive for candida which they don't treat anymore, so I bought Candida Cleanse and next bronch was clear, but for the damaged areas.Have you had fundiplication surgery? The gastro people go through many tests and can then treat the GERD more effectively, but they don't cover the throat.Look up Dr. jamie Koufman and her books on acid reflux.

I do really wish we could do a bronchoscopy at this point.

@margiebanks Cold sensation – that is a great description. I described it that way to my doctor at Stanford and she said she had not heard that before. I wonder sometimes!
