Can't get help from doctors in my area. Pain, hearing/job loss...

Posted by 30yearsofpain @30yearsofpain, Jul 9, 2021

Have been dealing with pain for over 30 years. Doctors making nothing but assumptions. Nearly killed me once. Lost hearing 3 hours after outpatient surgery. After getting a needle in the ear by an ENT I send a message to my doc and get the message attached.

I had to figure out my gluten allergy on my own, that was causing chronic pain and many other issues for decades. For 20 years I've had what my current surgeon calls the largest anal fissure he's seen. The whole time my docs blamed me and told me it was from this or that. I did everything they asked. One guy looks in my rear and it's obvious.

I feel like doctors in West Michigan are, on the whole, just really bad.

What can I do? I've lost jobs and can barely run the business I've had for 10 years. I've grown up with abuse, moved every 2 years until age 30, was a father at age 18, I have severe arthritis (by my mid 30s), recently lost a good deal of hearing, was 275 pounds and am now 190. Been going through my bucket list while stuck in the house unable to go out because of extreme pain. Been trying to get to physical therapy because my muscles are messed up from hunching over in pain for 20 years, every day, all day long. But I can't get there because of this fissure.

Hello @30yearsofpain, Welcome to Connect. Sorry to hear you have been suffering from an anal fissure for over 20 years and nothing the doctors have suggested for treatments has helped. If I read your post correctly, the anal fissure is causing all or most of the chronic pain you are having now. Mayo Clinic has some information that you probably already know or have seen but thought I would share it just in case you haven't seen it – https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anal-fissure/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20351430.

Have you thought about seeking help at a major teaching hospital or health facility like Mayo Clinic? If you would like to seek help from Mayo Clinic, contact one of the appointment offices. The contact information for Minnesota, Arizona and Florida can be found here http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.

Mayo said they're too busy to help. What a hopeless system. Gotta have enough money to get help.

@30yearsofpain, I'm sorry that you felt that Mayo didn't have time for you. It is true that Mayo Clinic has more requests for appointments than available openings. Mayo’s goal is to provide the best care each patient's needs, but does not want you to incur additional costs for evaluation or travel if there is not care to offer that is different from what you’re already receiving.

I'm receiving nothing but a token gesture. I think it has to do more with my monetary status.

Under the ACA the current health plan available to everyone who is uninsured you should be able to obtain coverage and money should not be the issue. From the sound of your ongoing situation you may need some kind of support system too. If you go to an emergency room with your fissure as large as it is they cannot turn you away, whether you have insurance or not.

It is truly sad that Mayo cannot help people in need. I have an issue and when researching the issue Mayo repeatedly popped up with suggestions and an opportunity to schedule an appointment. I wasted three weeks waiting for the tele appointment to be told to go elsewhere. I filed a complaint which was not adequately investigated. And, insult to injury, they continue to spend millions on advertising when you cannot even get an in-person appointment. Shame on Mayo.

@chiprtom I can understand that you are frustrated by the outcome. There is a very high volume of people each year who are trying to get into Mayo Clinic and only so many appointments available. Part of the process is making sure the people who need the level of care offered at Mayo Clinic are able to receive it and if your case can be seen elsewhere due to the circumstances, they may recommend you seek care closer to home. It isn't always what you want to hear, I completely understand.

Can I ask if you received a physician referral for care at Mayo or if you reached out on your own?

I was researching the issue on line and Mayo recommendations repeatedly popped up. I read thru the information provided by the Mayo and was then given the opportunity to make an appointment. I thought that was great to get an appointment. The appointment was made three weeks out and was just a telephonic appointment with a male who was not a doctor nor do I believe he was a nurse. He just explained I needed a referral and provided me contact info for a doctor in Jacksonville who he said would conduct some tests then make a Mayo referral. When I contacted that doctors office I was told I needed the a referral from my primary care physician along with an ultrasound and blood tests and that they would not refer me to Mayo but would handle treatment internal. I was extremely upset for being misled by Mayo and what really infuriates me is to see the television adds that tout the treatment at Mayo. The money Mayo spends on advertising is totally misspent money. You can’t get an appointment at Mayo.
