Bronchoscopy

Posted by @ameliar, Sun, Nov 4 11:19am

I am scheduled to have a bronchoscopy. Has anyone had this? My Dr. said he will be able to get an accurate culture by doing this.

A bronch is done usually in the ambulatory care department of surgery – you go home after. An IV is inserted and your throat is numbed. You won’t remember a thing. They go down and with a camera look around in your lungs. They may do a lavage ( washing). They will take a sample for culture. When you have your appointment afterwards your doctor should show you pics on his/her computer and explain it all thoroughly. That’s the interesting part. Good luck.

I’ve had a couple of them done. Irene5 described the procedure well. They didn’t give explanations afterwards, other than once the cultures were done, the results would be available. They did tell me things like everything went well and what to expect for the rest of the day. I think I was supposed to just take it a little easier than usual. Other than initial anxiety about not ever having it done before, it was a relatively easy procedure.

My results took six weeks to the day to find out I had MAC. You have to be patient.

I had a sputum test to look for this….. did you remain patient or check in with your specialist occasionally? It’s been almost 4 weeks and I haven’t checked in yet.
