Bronchiectasis for five years. Newly diagnosed with AFib

Posted by rozie83 @rozie83, May 18 11:15am

I have had Bronchiectasis about five years. I was just diagnosed with AFib. I know that people in this support group are dealing with many diagnoses at once. This, however, threw me for a loop. The added burden of treatment and possible bleeding has been hard to accept. I have been to ER twice in past two weeks. It's all so scary.

It does seem like things snowball after the initial diagnosis. While medication is often recommended as the first line, due to other issues it might be worth inquiring about cardiac ablation for the AFib. Generally an outpatient procedure and minimally invasive.

@rmoore901 Thank you for the suggestion. I haven't talked with my cardiologist about any other options. This diagnosis is less than a week old although I should have been diagnosed before now. My symptoms had not been interpreted correctly. They cannot find a monitor that will work with my 82 pound frame in order to get more information. But I will need to be talking to her about
ablation.

@rozie83 the zio patch heart monitor could be an option even on your very small frame. It’s a “sticker” that goes across your left upper chest/breastbone area for continuous monitoring. You mail it back in at the end, the company, irhythm downloads the data and sends it to your cardiologist. Good luck with all of this.

@rmoore901 Thank you. I'll look into that. The cardiologist is going to see if she can use the two days of data they already have.

@rozie83 hopefully the two days will provide enough data. I believe the time period for the device, based on the drs orders is 2-14 days. My Dr wrote mine for 14 days however he said I could stop after a week if I needed to since I couldn’t use the smart vest while wearing the patch. Take good care.

Thank you. I hope so. Otherwise, they just won't have that data. So much to coordinate. Smart vest (you) and monitor. Roz

@rozie83 I agree with others the Zio 14 day monitor should work for you as it sticks directly to your skin. I also agree that if the 14 day monitor confirms AFib (mine did not) you might consider ablation. I was told ablation works best when done early, on a healthy heart. So there is an overall picture to consider, like all things. A echocardiogram should provide your cardiologist the information they need, along with the 14 day monitor, to make that assessment. If it were me, I would get multiple opinions. I have been surprised by the varying approaches between different cardiologists. Good luck!
