brain cancer (GBM) grade 4 Spread to spine

Posted by @pattih in Brain & Nervous System, Nov 1, 2011

brain cancer started in my brother's brain 12/1/2010 recently spread to his spine. Prognosis very poor. undergoing radiation on spine and Avastin IV treatments. I was told this is very rare and only 1% of patients diagnosed with GBM grade 4 have this metastasize to the spine( Called Drop Metastasis) has anyone heard of this or does anyone know someone with this serious condition?.

Hello -
I unfortunatley do not have any advice on the GBM - however, if you would like to see a Mayo Clinic physician please click on the "Request an Appointment" link on the upper right hand corner of your screen.

I will keep searching the Mayo Clinic sites in hopes of finding more information to share with you.

HI, unfortunately my brother passed away on Nov 18, 2011. once the cancer got to his spine it just overpowered him. within 3 weeks all treatments stopped working and we found out through Brain MRI on Nov 7th he had tumors all over his brain and the original GBM was growing again. The doctors gave him 2 weeks to live at that time and he died in 11 days. It was one of the most horrible things I had to watch. I stayed with him 24 hrs a day until he passed away. I've never seen anything destroy someone so fast. For the rest of my life I will be making donations for brain cancer research. Thank you for you offering to help me. I wish you a Happy&,Healthy New Year!

Hi..... my brother was diagnosed with Stage 4 GBM in March of 2006... the doctors gave him 18 months, yet he is still with us. However, just today his new wife and I brought him to the ER to be admitted for surgery after a tumor was found on his spine.. Drop Metastasis.. he was just married August 25th of this year.. we are very, very afraid of what this may mean for him.. I truly am sorry for your loss.. here we thought the GBM was bad enough, and now we find that he is in more danger than we could ever imagine.... if not for my brother's new condition and me searching for answers and information, I would not have read your story... I sincerely hope you are doing well. My brother's birthday is November 13th. Hopefully he will be 59. Take Care.

HI, I am sorry to hear about your brother. I know how scared you & your family must feel. unfortunately there is such little information for this type of cancer. I too searched for information and answers almost everyday. I did find out some information on drop metastasis but not much. Please understand although the GBM diagnosis is the same it sounds like your brother has responded to treatments very well. If they feel they can do the surgery then there is still hope. Each person is different. For what ever reason my brother didn't respond well to any treatments. Don't lose hope. I will keep you & your family in my prayers. I'm happy to chat anytime if you want. take care!

I'm so sorry for your loss. In times like these, it's very hard for people to know what to say, and that may be why I see there are 161 views and only a few replies. But I will say may God bless you and your family as you move through the coming months. It must be very difficult during these times. Please know that there are others out there who care and who are praying for you.
