Bowel movements - pieces crisscross piled on top of each other

Posted by sandrajane @sandrajane, Mar 17 4:40am

This is a little hard to describe, but has anyone with IBS had movements that look like four or five pieces crisscross piled on top of one another? A little on the softer side, but still holding together. My IBS is in a flare right now with ache on left side that moves anywhere from lower pelvic area to the top of the waist. Occasional crampiness and occasional frequent movements. 65 years old. I have not had a colonoscopy. Had IBS for 30 years.

I have IBD, specifically Collagenous Colitis and have bowel movements that are similar to what you describe. I suggest doing an on-line search for the Bristol scale, which rates BMs from 1 to 7 with 1 being severe constipation and 7 being watery diarrhea. What you are describing could be a 5 or a 6 which are considered diarrhea. I've found the scale very helpful when describing my symptoms to my gastroenterologist.

@sandrajane - do you have IBS-D or IBS-mixed? How are you doing today?

Mixed. Better today , took one dose of pepto yesterday morning.
Still don’t know why it happened. I didn’t eat anything out of the ordinary, but I have so many weird symptoms with this IBS. It’s just a Way of life that is not fun

@sandrajane - glad it's better today. Sorry to hear weird symptoms are a way of life with your IBS. Sigh ...

@sandrajane Just be careful and watchful. I had IBS for decades before it evolved into UC. Never knew that could happen but it can and a GI told me this. I went to the ER a couple of years ago with what I thought was IBS since I had diarrhea attacks for over a month. They did a CT. Found some colitis around the colon area behind my navel. Unfortunately, it's now IBD. Best of luck.

It sounds like IBD.I would think that you may have Diverticulitis when you mention left sided pain.It would be useful to have a colonoscopy.

No IBS , but I have had those on occasion. I think it has a lot to do with what you had to eat preceding the BM. In my case I believe it was when I had a lower % of fiber in my meals.

Hi @rashida - completely valid question. Isn't medicine so full of acronyms? UC is used here to mean ulcerative colitis.
