Been treated for major depressive disorder for most of my life.

Posted by rose67 @rose67, Nov 6, 2016

Most of my life has been a struggle. Always having to push myself to do things. Ive been on every med for depression. Some helped with the sadness but nothing has ever helped in other ways, ie constant fatigue, low self esteem, no drive, i have to push myself to do basic things but lately can’t even really do that. I start things occasionally but never finish. Finally on my last visit with my psychiatrist he told me that he thinks the one thing that would help is taking adderal. He said that he can’t prescribe it to me because he is at the limit for prescribing this medication. He told me to find another dr to prescribe it. To tell the dr yhat he believes this will finally give me some relief. I am so desperate because i feel i am alive but do not have the strength to actually live. This is my only option now. I live in Philadelphia Pa and need to find a dr asap because i cannot go on like this any longer. I have a job but have been unable to go for 3 weeks now. Is there anyone who can recommend a dr where i live? Please help….. i am
osing hope….

Hi Sandytoes. I like your moniker. At the time of my stent my right coronary artery was99% blocked. They did that one and had to leave one undone because it was so small and had a shar p angle jn it. It was 90% blocked so i will have some angina which they gave me medicine for. As a matter of fact, i just started doing a little vacuuming and had to come back and sit down. The thing is i also have reflux disease pretty bad and i can’t tell the difference between that pain and a heart attack.

Thank you so much for caring. There is no one i can talk to about any of this. My kids love me but i swear i can see their eyes glaze over when i start talking. And i didn’t think i needed any friends so i dont have any. Boy was i wrong. If i want to.talk to someone do i have to put the @sign in fro t of their name?

Ever faithful, Danyb

@sandytoes14 I totally understand what you mean. As I mentioned, my father (after abusing all four of his girls) was allowed visitation in the divorce decree! It was a “no no” topic for all back then. People just didn’t want to believe or talk about something so horrific.

Welcome to Connect @rose67.
Certainly a frustrating journey for you. I to have suffered with bought of depression. In the beginning my doctor’s taught me many self help techniques and then added Zoloft and Keppra to help. Eventually I was successful at the self help techniques so I was able to discontinue the medications. But the best help I received at Mayo Clinic Rodchester. I really recommend this program. It sounds like depression has taken away your joy. It’s time to take it back.

Recently the depression has returned and my self help techniques are not working alone. We found out I have a tumor that is over producing hormones. These hormones effect depression and cause anxiety and extremely high blood pressure. I truly believe there is a cause and effect for everything. You need to find out what’s causing yours.

You may us this link if you decide to make an appointment at any of the locations.

Hi Georgette, How goes the battle? I hope that you are doing okay. I got up at 6:30 this morning so I could curl my granddaughters hair. I hate getting up that early I will never be a morning person that’s for sure. Another thing LesBatts and Minnie1971 are both me. I tried to drop the LesBatts and change it to Minnie1971 but for some reason it didn’t work. Anyway please let us know how you’re feeling. Have a wonderful day

I have suffered with mental illness for about 40 year now. I recently went to a new doctor and he prescribed new medication. For the last 2 weeks if I wake
up in the middle of the night sit up in bed get light headed and fall back on my pillow. I do not black out just get light headed.

Hi. I am new. Just saying hello for now. In the middle of laundry, ironing and some packing for work tomorrow. Was diagnosed with severe clinical depression over 20 yrs. ago. I am 52. I think now its called Major Depressive Disorder. Whatever. Its still the same thing. Have been really depressed the past few days, so that means I stay inside and sleep a lot. I got up today at 5:30 PM. I can do that since I’m single with no kids. I’ve never been married.
Now I’m playing catch up with all that I must do to get ready for work tomorrow; For me that means I leave the country for 3 days (London.)
Take care everyone.

Hello Rose,
I can relate to your situation. I have been in treatment for depression on and off since I was a teenager. I am now taking a medication very similar to adderall. It is called vyvanse. It’s in the same family of drugs that are mainly used for ADHD. I agree with Justin that your doctor should refer you to someone and it couldn’t hurt to be checked out by a primary care physican (although your psychiatrist should’ve also been aware of your entire medical history before recommending a certain medication).
To address your hopelessness…when I started taking the vyvanse, it made a huge difference in my ability to be able to function. Now, I notice that if for some reason I miss a dose, I really have a terrible day (unfortunately, these medications are addictive, did your doctor tell you this). It doesn’t “cure” the depression, but it makes it a whole lot easier to get through the days… I hope this works out for you.

I too have been taking Zoloft for over 25years and am at 200mg. Felt this wasn’t working anymore so went to psychologist and he prescribed 300mg Wellbutrin along with the Zoloft. I’ve been taking this for 8 months and do not feel it is helping me. Are B vitamins a crucial part? Also I would like to know if anyone taking Zoloft for years has experienced hearing loss.

Good luck with going off your meds. I’m Bipolar therefore I know that I’ll be on meds. for the rest of my life. That used to really bother me but I have made piece with myself about taking meds. Sure I’d like to be without them but that’s not going to happen and I’ve accepted that fact.

Hi, @lesbatts–my name is Lisa, and I’m a new moderator for the Mental Health group here on Connect. You’d mentioned you’d been on about 30 medications and that it took a long time to get it right with the combination you are currently taking. I am wondering if you have any tips or suggestions for others who are still in the process of trying to find the right combination of medicines for their depression?
