Been treated for major depressive disorder for most of my life.

Posted by @rose67, Nov 6, 2016

Most of my life has been a struggle. Always having to push myself to do things. Ive been on every med for depression. Some helped with the sadness but nothing has ever helped in other ways, ie constant fatigue, low self esteem, no drive, i have to push myself to do basic things but lately can’t even really do that. I start things occasionally but never finish. Finally on my last visit with my psychiatrist he told me that he thinks the one thing that would help is taking adderal. He said that he can’t prescribe it to me because he is at the limit for prescribing this medication. He told me to find another dr to prescribe it. To tell the dr yhat he believes this will finally give me some relief. I am so desperate because i feel i am alive but do not have the strength to actually live. This is my only option now. I live in Philadelphia Pa and need to find a dr asap because i cannot go on like this any longer. I have a job but have been unable to go for 3 weeks now. Is there anyone who can recommend a dr where i live? Please help….. i am
osing hope….

Hello rose67, and welcome to Connect. I would like to thank you for sharing your story and your obvious frustrations. Although it must not be easy, talking about it is a healthy step.

I would like you to meet @dawn_giacabazi, @jimhd, and @berit who have talked about having major depression and ways that they have coped with it.

You have come to the right place to meet others in similar situations who also have felt like they might lose hope. As far as a physician in your area, it may be best if your current physician could refer you to another physician in the Philadelphia area. Have you discussed being referred to another physician so that you can be prescribed the adderal?

Hello Rose67

I am Canadian so our procedures may differ.
I have been diagnosed with cronic depression for (20)years now.
Before you decide to take Adderall you should consider going to your GP to get a full checkup.
I have gone into several low depression bouts with excessive sleeping problems.
First of all you could have a hypothyroid problem or lack B12 and other nutrients or even checking your heart health. Blood work should be taken before taking such a dangerous drug. There are many bad side effects when taking Adderall. This way you will be more aware for the side effects that could affect you personally.
It is best to look at other causes that could be affecting your health. There are many other diseases that could be causing your problems.
I am not saying you do not have chronic depression but all basic steps should be taken first.
One thing that I can not understand is why your doctor has a limit for prescribing Adderall?
The drug Adderall stimulates your Central Nervous System which a Nueroligist would also prescribe but you would need a referral from your GP.
You have been very brave to ask for help. I myself have been very reserved with telling people about my depression.
As I do have (4) Auto-Immune diseases due to stress. Another warning I would like to express is the very dangers of STRESS. Try to release your worries or excessive work loads at work and your continuing work loads when you get home with your children and husband. Husbands and wives help each other so your stress levels are lowered. Medically speaking you may not know it at the time but stress follows you and health problems can catch up with you (2-5)years later when you least expect it. Everyone experiences stress but you need to learn how to handle your stress. So your stress does not destroy your health.

Welcome to Connect @rose67.
Certainly a frustrating journey for you. I to have suffered with bought of depression. In the beginning my doctor’s taught me many self help techniques and then added Zoloft and Keppra to help. Eventually I was successful at the self help techniques so I was able to discontinue the medications. But the best help I received at Mayo Clinic Rodchester. I really recommend this program. It sounds like depression has taken away your joy. It’s time to take it back.

Recently the depression has returned and my self help techniques are not working alone. We found out I have a tumor that is over producing hormones. These hormones effect depression and cause anxiety and extremely high blood pressure. I truly believe there is a cause and effect for everything. You need to find out what’s causing yours.

You may us this link if you decide to make an appointment at any of the locations.

Are you sure you’re not Bipolar? Many times when meds. don’t work or only partially Looking into the Bipolar aspet would be a good idea. Also, I suffer from anxiety along with being Bipolar and when one of the doctors I saw gave me Adderal I had the worst anxiety that I’ve ever had and I thought I was going to speed my brains out. Adderal is basically prescription speed. I would assume they have made it a controlled substance as your doctor can’t prescribe anymore. It may work great for you but I would never touch it again. Good luck!

I too have mdd and have been struggling for 20+ years. I can tell you that if you are not finding relief from you medication therapy that maybe it is external factors that you might be able to change. I currently am living in a place where I hate everything here but can’t leave because of kids family etc. Its because of my husbands job that we go where they tell us. I have almost lived here a year and decided over time that I just have to find something that I like and can do that will make me feel a little happier than I had been. You need a positive escape. Like a hobby which could be anything really. You could write, make things, I knit which is repetitive and easy. Im not sure what you like to do or did like to do but you may have to look into other things to do besides the stuff you might have liked before. I hope this helps a little and if you want to do something or learn something, youtube is a great way to do that.

Hello Rose,
I can relate to your situation. I have been in treatment for depression on and off since I was a teenager. I am now taking a medication very similar to adderall. It is called vyvanse. It’s in the same family of drugs that are mainly used for ADHD. I agree with Justin that your doctor should refer you to someone and it couldn’t hurt to be checked out by a primary care physican (although your psychiatrist should’ve also been aware of your entire medical history before recommending a certain medication).
To address your hopelessness…when I started taking the vyvanse, it made a huge difference in my ability to be able to function. Now, I notice that if for some reason I miss a dose, I really have a terrible day (unfortunately, these medications are addictive, did your doctor tell you this). It doesn’t “cure” the depression, but it makes it a whole lot easier to get through the days… I hope this works out for you.

Many times the types of drugs taken for ADHD are very stimulating and can cause anxiety .I don’t know if that’s true for Vyvanse I’ve never heard of it. I know that when I took Adderal or any of that class of drugs I had to stop taking them as I was having major anxiety on them. Maybe there aren’t any problems like that with Vyvanse, like I said I’ve never heard of this drug, unless it’s a generic of some drug I have heard of. I guess I’ll look it up.

Take care all,
Leslie

Welcome new members @sharlynn62 and @heatherf316. Your knowledge and experience is appreciated. We look forward to getting to know more about each of you.

Heather, do you use both medication and positive escape therapy to help manage depression?
Leslie, here’s more info about Vyvanse http://mayocl.in/2gjQgx8
Sharlynn, have you had to manage drug-induced anxiety?

Thank you for the information on Vyvanse Colleen I’ll check out their website.

Hi Rose, I can really relate to your post, as I too have been suffering from major depression most of my adult life. I think I also have SAD as well but didn’t tolerate the Wellbutrin that doctor prescribed for this, plus didn’t seem to help. Anyway…about the Adderral, you don’t need a psychiatrist to order this ( in USA) your primary care doctor can order as well. Did your psychiatrist send a note to your PCP ? I would wonder why he is ordering so many patients Adderral that he has met his limit?
I am taking Adderral in addition to Cymbalta and some days it helps and some times I go back to bed and sleep after taking it. But, I must say when I first started taking it it worked wonderfully. We were on vacation and I was able to enjoy it. I also have Fibromyalgia and Chronic pain. The fatigue with the Fibromyalgia is awful.
I have also read that Adderal needs to keep getting increased in dosage, as we begin to tolerate it? Best of luck to you.

Hi Rose. I have been struggling with mdd since my teenage years. I’m 42 now and the past 10 years it had been severe after being diagnosed with spastic cerebral arteries and pseudo tumor cerebri. The fatigue and loss of drive have been debilitating. My primary care doc prescribed Ritalin for me and it helped for awhile before losing the stimulating effect in my cns. He then prescribed vyvance and I was thrilled that it too worked very well with increasing my energy but then stopped shortly after. It seems that I become tolerant after a short period of time. Currently just taking Trintellix but still experiencing pretty extreme fatigue. Maybe you’ll have a better outcome with it. Contact your pcp to find out if he/she would prescribe it for you. Praying that you find some relief.

This is Sharlynn. No, I have not had to manage drug-induced anxiety. I really don’t experience anxiety. I experience mostly irritability and anger due too constant pain and circumstances that in my life that are beyond my control (yes, I have control issues and right now I feel like I have very little control over a lot of things, especially what is happening to my own body).

Hi. I am new. Just saying hello for now. In the middle of laundry, ironing and some packing for work tomorrow. Was diagnosed with severe clinical depression over 20 yrs. ago. I am 52. I think now its called Major Depressive Disorder. Whatever. Its still the same thing. Have been really depressed the past few days, so that means I stay inside and sleep a lot. I got up today at 5:30 PM. I can do that since I’m single with no kids. I’ve never been married.
Now I’m playing catch up with all that I must do to get ready for work tomorrow; For me that means I leave the country for 3 days (London.)
Take care everyone.

Hello @minnesota64, welcome to Connect. Thank you for introducing yourself to the Mental Health group. Sometimes just writing or talking about what you are feeling is therapeutic and can help you get yourself moving.

I moved your post in to an existing discussion on Major depressive disorder so that your post would be seen by others who also have this illness.

@minnesota64, you said you were just saying hello for now, but preparing for a trip to London in a few days sounds exciting. Going for business or pleasure?

I guess the obvious question would be have you tried medications? As I stated before I went through some 30 odd pills and I’ve finally got a cocktail that works okay for me. Notice I say okay. I’m never going to be slap happy and I’ll probably never be without some type of anxiety. How long will this work for me? Who knows, I’ve been on it for quite sometime now and it hasn’t had the poop out effect yet. I take four medications a day. I am tired all the time from my meds. and I’ve gained a copious amount of weight from them. I’d like to wean myself off one of them but now’s not the time.
I feel bad that you are depressed most of the time. Do you have anxiety also? Do you like living alone? At least you still have a job, I still can’t have a job.
I’m sure you’ve heard all the suggestions like, eat a good diet, take a walk, do yoga, meditate etc. etc.
I felt like all the suggestions that I got from people would not help me at all, it was a monumental task just getting out of the bed in the morning therefore trying to do anything was impossible, I was trying to keep my wits about me. I know what you mean about staying in be all day. I got more depressed if I tried to stay in bed all day. If I got up and did at least one chore I would feel a little better.
I am an artist and I haven’t been in my studio for over a year. Today I’m going to clean it and perhaps work for a while.
I do think it’s good that you can get your clothes ready and actually go on a trip for work. I would never be able to get on a plane without some kind of benzo. Let us know how you’re feeling when you get back.
Please let us know what you’ve tried and if anything has worked for you.
Good luck and have a safe trip

Leslie
