Anyone told by doctor to have medical plan refer to Mayo Clinic?

Posted by orfel @orfel, Nov 15 5:39am

I approached my Doctor to send my medical file to Mayo Clinic. I was told to call my medical plan to have them send my file to Mayo. I thought since he is my doctor he would make a case for them to accept me for testing. I suffer from Fibromyalgia, weakness and pain. Feels more like MS- thank you for your response in advance.

@orfel
When you mention Medical Plan, are you referring to your Medical Insurance Plan? I have never heard of a medical insurance company submitting medical records to another clinic. They normally deal with diagnostic codes and testing codes. Definitely not the same as a doctors notes or actual test results.

You can self-refer yourself to Mayo if your provider will not. You can start with filling out the intake form or calling the Mayo Clinic location of your preference. Both can be found here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

When filling out the form, you will be asked questions about your location (within the US or international), your main concern and insurance coverage (optional). These are short answer questions to schedule a phone appointment with the scheduler. When you talk with the scheduler, you will be able to give more information and elaborate on the short answers. They can also help determine the best department to start with since you have several different yet related diagnoses. They can also help with questions on how to obtain and submit medical records.

Perhaps your doctor meant to say you might need
pre-approval from your insurance to be covered at
the clinic. Some PPOs and advantage plans are restrictive and may not qualify you for out of network
consultation. That needs to be clarified by your doctor
and your insurer.

Hi @orfel. May I suggest contacting your patient advocate at your healthcare system to verify their referral protocol to enable processing justifying medical records immediately sent with detailed medical history referral info to enable medical necessity request preventing unnecessary denial/appeal and delay🙃. Hope this is helpful new avenue and quickest healing to you🌈
