Anyone have odd brain sensations, when tappering Prednisone??

Posted by helpme26 @helpme26, 5 days ago

I was diagnosed in June of 2025 and started on Prednisone 20mg. Now down to 3mg with no pain. I seem to not be able to go lower than this as then I get a feeling in my head that is like squeezing my brain. Anyone else have anything like this? I've had an MRI and neurologist says my brain is just aging(74) and I'm old.

Yes, I've had that weird feeling of "pressure" in the head sometimes. I found out that it's most likely due to dehydration and as soon as it happens I start drinking a lot of water and it stops. It feels very scary, I know. It might be related to high blood pressure is what I initially thought. I searched it initially and found the "dehydration" info and it really does work. If I forget to drink enough water that's when it seems to happen.
I just searched again and here is the link to what I found and another question about electrolytes too. It explains a lot about Prednisone and how dehydration can affect our blood vessels and pressure. It's been very helpful to me. I'm 73 and "my brain is aging too!" lol.... Might try drinking a lot of water next time it happens and see if it stops. And electrolytes sometimes too?

Hope this helps. Glad you're down to 3mg. I just got diagnosed 7/31/26, had to go from 15, to 20 to 25mg. Now at 17.5mg heading down. Long way to go! Blessings.

@boomermeg thank you for information about dehydration. Although I feel I'm hydrated ,I will certainly increase my intake. My blood pressure does fluctuate so I'll monitor it more closely. It does make me feel better knowing I'm not alone. Again thank you and good luck on your journey.

@helpme26
It also explains about electrolytes being lost too and my Rheumatologist mentioned electrolytes too.
It makes sense what it said about the vessels narrowing due to dehydration and I've heard some Dr's say it's easy to get dehydrated and not realize it because we actually need more water than we think. Hope it helps.
I need to try to find a good electrolyte powder without sugar or junk it in. I looked a little but they can be expensive and they don't pay for return shipping, at least the ones I looked at. Will keep looking. Store ones can work but prefer to make at home with filtered water.
Hope water helps you. Blessings.

recent diagnosis (Summer 2026) initially pelvic girdle and shoulders/neck
The Pelvic girdle has not returned at all in the following4 months.
2/10/26 starting a much longer course to see if we can get the neck and shoulders into remission. Up to now short course prednisole has led to return of symptoms within 2 weeks of stopping.

Sorry to hear this. Maybe need longer, slower taper? May you find the right treatment that helps you get remission and get off Prednisone again. Blessings.

@boomermeg If drinking more water helps, the sensation is more likely due to low blood pressure. My prednisone withdrawal threw me into secondary adrenal insufficiency, and when it first hit really hard, I was so dizzy and off balance I could barely walk. I’m in my 70’s, too, and an older friend and retired physician told me it was probably a UTI, and I then remembered learning in gerontology that UTIs in older adults can manifest like that. While waiting for test results, I hydrated like crazy and got much much better, although the worst was actually when I came home from the clinic. I stood in line at the bakery and then started walking home when all of a sudden my legs felt like logs and I almost fainted. I recognized it as hypotension from my years of caring for my husband. Now I make sure I drink a lot of water, not so much that I overly hydrate. And my rheumatologist agreed that I should stop my high blood pressure medicine (which in my case was prescribed as a precaution because of white coat anxiety making an accurate read impossible. That’s another story.)

Sometimes and I’m at 2 mg. Like a previous answer I usually take an electrolyte drink and it goes away. Also sometimes it also feels like a migraine also. Hope this helps.

@boomermeg I like body armor. I drink a partial bottle once in while if I feel depleted. It has coconut water but also sugar. At least it’s not artificial sweetener.
I like the orange mango.
I wonder if the headache can be related to adrenal insufficiency if one is tapering off prednisone?

@caroljeand
Thank you. I'm only tapering at 17.5mg now so I'm not sure it would be related to adrenals at this doseage. My husband likes Gatorade Gatorlyte, but I don't like the ingredients or sucrose. I'll check out Body Armor, thanks. They use other names for many of the artificial sweetners, but if you look them up, you'll find they're the same as the ones you know aren't good (like 99.9% of them, other than stevia or some natural ones). Xylitol seems to be everywhere now and if you look that up it's really bad too, even for our hearts. Sucralose can alter our gut microbiome so that's a big No for me too. Wonder why these companies keep putting toxic stuff in products? Profits over humans? I'm trying to find a powder I can mix that tastes good without artificial sweeteners or too much real sugar. Stevia is ok. Hard to find. Anyway, thanks again. Blessings.
