Allergic to in the ear hearing aids

I get a bad rash with in the ear hearing aids. I have regular hearing loss for my age 73. What would be a good option for hearing my wife at home?

I'm an allergic type, but I got Philips 9050 hearing aids knowing that they are said to itch. I asked my hearing aid specialist in advance what to use, and she recommended OTC hydrocortisone cream. It's so cheap that I got a huge tube on Amazon for less than $2. It works, but it's too big to carry around in my purse. I tried prescription triamcinalone cream, which I always have a small tube of in the house for itches that sometimes cause a rash and other times are invisible. You might want to ask your PCP or ENT or allergist to prescribe that for your ears. Good luck. @ jutkele

@billhalliday Have you tried hearing aids that have professionally fit ear molds? Those molds can be created from different materials when someone is allergic. In the ear aids are also professionally fit, but I'm not sure the ITE product can be made from alternative materials. There are some big advantages to hearing aids that fit behind the ear, so that's another option you may wish to consider.

Your primary care doctor may be able to help determine if there is a cream that will help you.

Another options you could use to hear at home or in a one-on-one situation is a Williams Sound PocketTalker device. That would require you to use headphones that fit over the hear and give the person you want to listen to an attached microphone. Not exactly non cumbersome, but that product works well in many situations where a person with hearing loss is not using hearing aids.

@julieo4 yes, I have the non allergic moulds as I get eczema in my ears otherwise. My mother had the same problem...

I personally use behind the ear hearing aids and have good luck with them. I don't like the in the ear hearing aids. Right now I'm using Soundbright hearing aids which were affordable and available on the Internet. I'm sure there are other options for behind the ear hearing aids as well I would look into it.

I’ve been allergic to my hearing aids forever! It’s the conch area that bothers me. It’s much better with one of those tiny domes, are you using that already?

@paulchristison Is there an ear piece that goes into your ear canal? If not how do you receive sound from the device.

Behind the ear hearing aids generally use an ear mold or dome.

There is no earpiece that goes in the ear canal if you go to the eye clinic at Walmart they'll let you try out a pair for a few days to see how you like them but there is no piece that goes into the ear canal
