After total thyroid removal, and voice changes.
On 2/4/26 I had my total thyroid removed due to cancer. I had major changes in my voice after the surgery. Is this common ? Now it’s eight months since my surgery, and my voice has only improved slightly.
Has anyone’s voice returned to normal?

1 ReactionMy husband had a total thyroidectomy in 2008. I remember that the risk of potential changes in voice was discussed at the time but that did not happen. I don’t recall anything being said about parathyroid glands. In fact neither of us even knew then what parathyroid is until more recent years. Have you had a chance to discuss the change in your voice and the removal of parathyroid glands with your medical provider or the surgeon during a follow up appointment? If not could you get an appointment to do so?
@cehunt57 HI, thank you for your response. I had talked with my surgeon about the parathyroid glands. However I never discussed my voice because I had expected it to come back, and was giving it time. I did discuss it with my Endocrinologist. I had asked her, if I was going to get my voice back, would I have by now. She stated that it takes 9-12 months to heal from the surgery, that there is a chance I could still get it back during that time.
I had a surgery ultrasound follow-up done. This showed some tissue or something there in the area. It’s now a 3-4 month wait to see if it gets larger, or my cancer markers increase.
