Been diagnosed w multiple myeloma and hypertrophy cardio my apathy (obstructive) Sitting here anxiously because I need to stat mm therapy but they want heart issue cleared first. Anyone have ideas.

This is a tough one for you to digest. I'm guessing you are reeling. Not exactly the same, I am 71yrs old female who had a rt. lower lobectomy. During the pre-op, they discovered I had "heart thickening", (later diagnosed with oHCM). The thoracic surgeon went ahead with the lobectomy without any issue. Your situation sounds different than mine. I hope your cardiologist can manage your situation asap. Sending warm and loving hugs.

I am sorry to read that you are dealing with two serious health issues at the same time. I am unsure what you mean by "cleared." I was "cleared" to have cataract surgery, got the OK from the cardiology office. The same for a dental cleaning after my septal myectomy. In my opinion, your doctors definitely need to discuss together - and with colleagues - how they will proceed, we cannot give medical advice here. Many of us have learned that we need to be our own advocates and be squeaky wheels (they get the grease). Learn as much about HCM as you can, here is a starting place: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hypertrophic-cardiomyopathy/symptoms-causes/syc-20350198. Are you a patient at a COE (Center of Excellence)? Keep us up to date!

Hello @mcarre !

I am also diagnosed with similar conditions such as yourself. I am 63. I was diagnosed with MGUS in 2022 (a precursor to MM), and also HCM (non-obstructive) in 2009.

I cannot speak on the medical side as far as clearance before MM treatment, but I figure they will check to see how your heart might be affected and if it's sound enough for treatment.

I do know some excellent places to get information, besides this site, of course... check out the International Myeloma Foundation http://www.myeloma.org, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation http://www.themmrf.org, and Health Tree http://www.healhtree.org. For hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, check out http://www.4hcm.org.

Wishing you the best and please come back here if/when you can for an update, interested in your journey.

@walkinggirl hi there! I hope they are talking, while I sit here waiting for next step. Hematologist wants heart procedures done before starting therapy. Feel like I'm walking thru quicksand.

@mcarre Please be sure to check in with them very often. What kind of procedures is the hematologist thinking about? There is septal myectomy and ablation that are procedures. Talk to your cardiologist to see what he/she has in mind.
