There's some great information about hand transplantation at Mayo Clinic here: http://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/transplant-center/hand-transplant

Are you considering a hand transplant?

Hi Lindami,

Great question. Mayo Clinic’s hand transplant program has been in existence for more than three years. During that time, we’ve been able to help all of our patients in alternative ways through reconstructive surgery, prosthetics, transfers, and more.

As Colleen said, you can find out more from the information on Mayo's Hand Transplantation Surgery website. Here's specific info on choosing Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/transplant-center/hand-transplant/choosing-mayo-clinic.

Lindami,

It’s definitely a big decision. We have doctors in Minnesota that can see you and determine the best option for you. When you feel ready, you can request an appointment by following this link: http://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/transplant-center/hand-transplant/choosing-mayo-clinic/appointments-referrals.

Let us know if there’s anything else we can do to guide you. Best of luck, @lindami!

I have already met with the entire team numerous times. I am on the list,
but currently inactive due to a fall which caused me to break my hip.
My daughter and I were having a discussion/disagreement over whether Mayo
in Minnesota had performed a hand transplant. I do not believe they have,
yet she swears she read about 3 such operations.
I am a quad amputee since August 2014 and I am very excited about the
possibilities and completely committed. I can't wait until I can become
active on the list.
Can you tell me if they have performed any that I am not aware of?
Thanks and have a great day,
Linda
Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has not yet performed a hand transplant surgery. We have evaluated dozens of candidates that we were able to help in other ways and ultimately did not move forward with the transplant. Hand transplant is not for everyone and our selection process helps us determine which patients are candidates for alternative treatments.

Thanks Kristen for the info.

Linda: What great news to hear that you've already been in consultation with the Mayo Clinic Hand Transplant team. I for one will be very interested in following your journey. I hope you'll continue to share with us here. I'm going to see if I can find other people to connect you with here too. No promises, but one can always try right?

How long will you be out with the broken hip? When do you expect to be back on the active list? Are you using speech recognition software to write on Connect?

I am not sure about the hip, I am going to set up an appointment for an
x-ray to find out how it is progressing.
Actually I use a stylus in a cuff, and then I employ the old hunt and peck
system.
LOL, I have to admit I had a bit of a chuckle from the "hunt and peck" phrase. I got an immediate visual of a chicken tapping a smartphone.
Do keep us posted on the hip.
