Eagle syndrome: When to see a doctor?

Posted by alfshort71 @alfshort71, May 22, 2023

About 4 months ago my Va Dr said that I might have Eagle syndrome. I’m 51 male, about a week ago I was just tired and didn’t want to do anything. Last Tuesday when I was drinking my morning shake if felt like a raspberry seed got under my tongue. Also it felt like allergies because my nose would run and feels like cotton in my throat. Went to Dr on Wednesday did ekg said to go to ER for another EKG. They kept me overnight and did a stress test next morning and it was fine. But lastnite under my tongue hurt again and it would make my left lymph node swell and hard to open mouth. Today it feels like every time I swallow that it’s a big cotton ball that stops at the bottom of my neck and lymph node is swelling up. Do I need to get seen ASAP. Thanks

@alfshort71, it sounds like you may have Salivary Stone blockage. Look online about its symptoms, and location of salivary gland openings under the tongue. Try placing sour hard candy pieces under your tongue or using the juice of lemons to cause the glands to pump out the stone pieces/piece. Massaging it upward with fingertip is also helpful. My husband did this after having symptoms such as you describe, and a pretty large calculi popped out. It was almost half-an-inch long! If you do all this and it does not alleviate the symptoms, maybe you should see a dentist ASAP.
In addition, after a CAT Scan, the doctors told me they suspected Eagles Syndrome. Truthfully, if I had listened to them, I would be long dead. Thank God, for placing an uneasy feeling in my spirit, which screamed "No, it is not Eagles Syndrome." Finally, a great ENT did a nasal/throat scoping, which proved I had a tumor near my vocal cords (Pyriform Sinus Cancer). This tumor had been causing my increasing left-sided, ear and throat pain. I am sorry to say, but firmly believe that many times some doctors will theorize you have a rare condition when they are confounded as to a diagnosis. Although I had three previous scoping's done and even that CAT Scan, it took a fourth scoping to find the obvious tumor. @alfshort71, I'm asking him right now since it's been so long ago! He said he massaged with his fingertips on the outside of his neck, starting below the earlobe. Very, very gently (a four-five-inch stretch) going toward chin. You will be able to feel the glands there, slightly under the chin. Keep the lemon or sour candy inside the mouth as long as you can tolerate. Unfortunately, he had to do this several times per day until it finally popped out in the middle of the night. It was very painful...he swelled way up too, underneath his tongue. The swelling progressed until about day four, when it finally came out. I have included a photo of the stone as we kept it for reference! Please try not to gag. He said he could not feel the stone when massaging, because it was so painful. You should probably go to the dentist, or an ENT to make sure that it IS a stone. Some have to be removed in other ways. You are in our thoughts and prayers for an answer.

I used to get strep throat all the time when I was younger. It’s been a long time since I have had it. I had my tonsils out in my early twenties so they took out my tonsils. Oh and that’s no fun when u are that old.
