Schizophrenia-

Posted by christmas22 @christmas22, May 6, 2023

Does schizophrenia start slowly my grandson who I have guardianship of had hallucinations twice? He has other issues like leaving a mess every room hes in and acts as if he is superior and will never talk to me only leave him alone or he bursts into a foul speach of curses. Dont know
whether he is heading towards schizophrenia or not.

Why don’t you get him evaluated if you have custody and have concerns? You don’t say his age but a google search says under 13 is rare and under 8 is considered early onset. More typically it’s diagnosed mid to late 20’s up to 30’s but the sooner you have him seen the better. I just read a headline from Medscape an app I subscribe to stating that cannabis is shown to be a big risk factor for schizophrenia in young men. You’ll have to verify with your grandson.

You are a wonderful grandma by reaching out and being proactive! There’s so much help out there! I’ve never personally dealt with Schizophrenia, but have with other mental health issues (I’m 62). I live in America, and when I pour over picking a Psychiatrist, I am noticing more and more that they include Schizophrenia as conditions they work with. When they literally list it, that gives it a lot of weight! Isn’t that encouraging?!?! They’ve come so far regarding the various mental health conditions!
If it were me, I’d start with finding a Psychiatrist who lists Schizophrenia out in the open on their website as conditions they treat, then after finding 2-3 of those, I’d call their office and get further information on how much they’ve dealt with it, and what types of testing do they do.
Another thing I would do is look up as much as I could about the illness, so you’re armed with knowledge! That can be (here in the USA) Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, WebMD, Stanford studies on Schizophrenia, or similar high level places in the UK. I’ll be one of your cheerleaders 📣!!!

Thank you so much for commenting on my post. I was kind of given up cause I thought I wasn't doing something right. He has not been diagnosed with schizophrenia. But I'm wondering if it's a slow move of a disease and that i have to wait and see more. Been tested for 5 hours, not a good report. The new Dr didn't blink an eye when I said I was concerned. She said I don't have a pattern yet. Thanks again I have his older sister on disability, emotional mood disorder.

You’ve got your hands full with 2 kids with issues. Don’t forget to take care of your mental health too. I’m a retired nurse and I know how direct patient care with no reprieve can do a number on us. If you need a therapist too get one for your own benefit.

I’m so proud of you for being so proactive. Keep at it, but like Jenatsky said, taking time for just you is crucial! There’s a govt. program that you can apply for and get respite care money. Our daughter and sil use it to get breaks from one of my young grandsons who is on the Autism spectrum (their oldest son, age5.) I’ll try and remember to get that information from her. 😊
