Chronic Abdominal Bloating and Pain

Posted by geb @gloriaeb, Aug 17, 2015

I am a relatively healthy person with a problem "bloated belly". My belly gets bigger as the day goes on; doesn't matter if I eat, drink only water, my belly still gets more bloated. The bloat continues up the abdomen into the midriff area...I have to loosen bra or put on a bigger one. This happens everyday. Pretty good in the morning.

I had the same problem. It got so bad I had to buy tunic tops. I also had shortness of breath. One day I passed out and at the hospital they informed me that a chest e-ray showed that I had a very large hiatal hernia. My whole stomach traveled into my chest. My stomach was leaning on my lungs and was behind my heart. I had surgery which didn't go well. I came home from the hospital with vomiting and severe diarrhea. It continued for months. I was told I have gastroparesis. It was caused during my surgery when the doctor cut a vagus nerve so I can't digest food any more. I've lost 50 pounds so far. I have taken every medicine and tried every diet. My only suggestion is get a chest x-ray. You never know. I wish you good luck. Take care. Ann

It sounds like "possible" asceitis caused by liver issues. I have cirrhosis and have had paracentis ( tapping or removal of excess liquid not being handled by my liver condition several times. First time almost 5 liters were removed in a matter of 40 minutes. Check with a GI or liver/kidney specialist.

Greenery is my kale and spinach with maybe grapes watermelon, I choose apple juice, blended and drink.. Tryin to get my veggies&fruit in every day that way my stomach might be happy and shrink..my PlasticSurgeon said I need to lose the fat then he would cut the excess skin off...Really!!! Why not jus cut it all off now..I think I have tried it all and all I'm doing is just depriving my self from the delicious food my stomach still gonna win..since it looks at me and say "na na na na"lololololol its a shame.. Mostly I just stay at home and let it all hang out.. The others parts of my body I can deal with, just haven't figured out whats up with this belly..anyway I wish u the best..Godbless gn

My experience with blooting is the type of food you consume. If I eat certain type of foods my blooting is at maximum. Bread, spaghetti, carbohydrates contributed but spicy or processed foods do it also. Plain and simple foods and vegetables don't do it. You have to pay attention to what you are eating. Comfort food and fry foods are trouble. All my health problems can be directed to bread where I ate it for 70 years. I have my entire health back by avoiding any and all flour products. It is very hard but it keeps me without blooting and GERD or Crohn's.

Still...if you have severe bloating in entirr abdomen area, problems with diarrhea and/or constipation and ankle swelling...take the time to check with a top notch GI or Liver doctor. Especially if you are diabetic and have a fatty liver issue or consume alcohol. You don't have to be a drinker if it is hereditary or genetic. My cirrhosis is NASH - which is non alcoholic Cirrhosis. God bless you.

Another similar option is eating low FODMAP foods. A study by researchers at Monash University in Australia has defined and listed problem foods for those with IBS symptoms. Kate Scarlata is a great source. Look her up on FB, Pinterest, Google. I have become completely intolerant of garlic and raw onion and found this elimination diet, food diary and re-introduction of foods to be very helpful. Most Registered nutritionists can help you follow the plan.

First off, I've been gluten and dairy free for over ten years. But even with those restrictions, still had increasing problems, especially in the last few years. I was placed on a low FODMAP diet by my gastroenterologist a little over a year ago. Initially, I felt so much better. But now I am having more and more food intolerances show up. I am fairly certain I have leaky gut and will be working to correct that problem soon (just need to get past the holidays so that I can have the time to research, study and figure out what to do next).

Web MD says "leaky gut" is a bit of a gray area. It is a gray area for traditional MDs but if you follow functional medicine docs or integrative medicine -- it is a wide open subject. There is much discussion about the microbiome, etc.

I have a question about what you wrote. Since I have Crohn's and according Dr Crohn's the illness impacts the liver and I have issues with inflammation pain you touched several issues that I have. I was diagnosed with fatty liver, was almost diabetic type 2, suffer from constipation, GERD, swelling of ankles, and blooting. A year and a half ago I changed my diet to vegetables with protein, limited fruits since they cause problems also, and no flour products or sugars since I get immediate pain. You seem to have the background knowledge I would like to hear about. I was totally disappointed with Mayo Clinic since after one week of testing and locating my Crohn's activity the Doctor prescribed Pentasa of which I am allergic to but she ignored my concern. Now the Mayo website recommends not to use Pentasa for Crohn's. I showed her the Liver Support Factors supplement pills that I started taking and was very helpful but she ignored them. All I was asking why they were helping me. Now with my diet and supplement pills I put Crohn's in remission, my diabetes was reversed, my GERD after 50 years completely stopped, my memory started to work, I can control the pain if I don't eat items that I know I shouldn't, but raw vegetables does impact the pain within one hour. I appreciate your knowledge and how you acquired it. Thank you for sharing.
