Phonak Hearing Aid Interference from Neighbor

Posted by gencha @gencha, Apr 16, 2023

My hearing aid started "bluetooth streaming +mic" on its own, blasting into my ear. The TV and radio were not on. I live in a senior apt. building. How could this be happening and how are they streaming into my hearing aid? Could wires be crossed? There were possibly five new apartment hookups and that is when the trouble started. My audiologist reset everything but it keeps happening. The first time it happened it came on so loud it scared me and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Help please.

Auto connect streaming happens sometimes when I get into a car. I have to just turn off bluetooth on my cellphone.

Thanks for responding. Bluetooth is off and the blasting stream still comes through. This weekend has been horrible. I had to open the battery door on the hearing aid thus losing sound from that one. It's like someone else is controlling my hearing aids.

Things I'd check. First I'd check cell phone and verify that bluetooth option is turned off so noice is not coming in via that path. Second I'd check if you have hearing aide app on your cell phone that has some option turned on that allows another source of input to hearing aides. Is it possible that you have some extra network connected that you need to disconnect or block?

I had this happen to me. I have Phonak hearing aids and I was receiving sound from someone in an apt below me using Bose wireless headphones. I had to have an audiologist change the receiving frequency on my hearing aids to allow it to stop. You’re not crazy. I tried turning off the Bluetooth on my aids and changing all the settings on my phone, but nothing stopped it until the audiologist called Phonak for help. Insist that your audiologist speaks to Phonak.

Thanks jcdf. You might have hit on my problem. We did check the apartment below and they were watching something else other than what was blasting in my ear. I am calling audiologist today discussing your response. Oh I know I am not crazy as the apt. manager and her assistant were here and they heard the country music blasting, holding it about 6 inches from their ears. They were the ones to check the apt. below me, also, as that was my first thought. I was glad that they did hear it. If the problem gets solved, I will post results.

Hi Don, yes the bluetooth is off. I have the T Coil which some auditoriums, museums and churches have installed but doubt that our apt bldg. has it. I am nowhere near the community room and it is being used by construction workers to store renovation equipment. I would hate to have to lose the T coil. It is difficult hearing speakers.

I apologize as I did mean to imply that you were imagining things, but rather that professionals can have an attitude that they know what they’re doing and therefore if there’s an issue it lies with us as laymen using the equipment.

No need to apologize, I knew your meaning. With this problem, I am finding that they are taking their good old time getting back to me which is aggravating also. Phonak has said that someone here has hooked on to my hearing aid with their bluetooth and it is not the T coil, so there is half the solution. Now getting them to find out the short range hijacker is next.

Day 8. Update to my HA interference problem. Management checked apartments above and below me and they were not on the same tv programs as that coming into my ear. My next door neighbor was not on my frequency so who knows where it is coming from. Bluetooth is not active. I did uninstall the Phonak App and the interference was constant all day. I had to open the battery door on one hearing aid to stop the interference and had only one in all day. Tomorrow I am going to audiologist to have him fix the HA somehow or I will need to get another one. Will post results when I get them.

Day 9 Update. My audiologist factory reset my HA today and adjustments made. I am using the unit button to adjust volume if I need. I do not have the Phonak app installed at the present. Watching tv is different, volume varies with channels and I find some broadcasters sound like they talk with a lisp but others don't. I have to adjust to these settings now but not having the blasting in my eardrum is not missed by any means. I am keeping fingers crossed. I am so happy to have found this venue and answers and comments from here. Thank you.
