New Here: Are there any programs to help caregivers financially?

Posted by pghsusan @pghsusan, Apr 7, 2023

Hello.

My Dad has stage 4 esophageal cancer. I am his caregiver and he lives with me and my family. He has been living with this for 26 months, which is longer than they expected...yay.

My question is that I have had to be off work more and more frequent with FMLA and of course I do not get paid for it.

Are there any programs that help caregivers financially?

Also, my fear is that my FMLA will run out and I will still need more time, are there any suggestions for this?

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.
Susan

The Family Caregiver Program, also known as Structured Family Caregiving (SFC), is a program provided by Caregiver Homes of Indiana via Seniorlink. Also working with Medicaid, SFC helps caregivers access resources, technology, and guidance as well as a financial stipend to aid with caregiving responsibilities.

@pghsusan What a wonderful thing you are doing for your father! No matter how hard it is, you will never regret what you are doing for him. You might try your local Agency on Aging to see what advice they have. Also, the state should have an office for aging. You can also try a google search for “paying for senior care.” That’s not much help, I’m afraid.
Please continue the wonderful care you are giving. Will you let me know what you learn?

Would SFC be available In Illinois as well?

The Area Agency on Aging may have resources they can suggest. There are foundations that have grants available. Here in Alabama , that agency recommended I apply for respite care reimbursement, which is not a lot, but every little bit helps. I hope you find something helpful.

I don’t know, but you could call the Illinois Department on Aging and ask about the caregiver program

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I completely understand. I’m 5 months post liver transplant. A few resources we use for financial help were helphopelive.org and gofundme.com.
It’s fundraising for you. You just need to share your links and have other people share as well.
Positive Vibes coming your way and speak your needs out loud to the universe and you’ll be surprised what can happen 😀
