Sharp pain started 13 years after TKR

Posted by janieben @janieben, Feb 14, 2023

Rt knee TKR in 2009. About a year ago, I started having pain on the outside of the knee when crossing/uncrossing my legs or making similar movements. I just had a TKR on the other knee Jan 9, 2023, and surgeon (who did both) said we would look at rt knee later after the recent TKR was stable (no pain and full range of motion) and try to find what was wrong. Has anyone else had this, and if so, what was the cause? Thank you in advance.

My friend's 16 year old knee is beginning to give her occasional pain. That is about the life expectancy of older implants, so she will be having it looked at after she recovers from her December partial hip replacement. I think that is why docs used to say "wait as long as you can before replacement" - but newer implants are expected to last longer.
Do you have arthritis or osteoporosis? Or is it possible you put a lot of strain on right knee when you were limping on the left one, waiting for replacement? If so, it may improve when the left knee heals.
In the meantime, you might try doing your knee PT once daily on the right knee as well as doing it as recommended on the left. It might help strengthen the muscles and make the pain less.
