New Year’s Resolution

Posted by alive @alive, Jan 22, 2023

Each year I make a New Year’s resolution. Most of the time it’s about exercising and losing some weight. Very often it’s a half-hearted resolution. This last holiday season I had a wake-up call: one of my medications causes weight gain and raises cholesterol, and my weight reach a number I promised myself I wouldn’t cross. Well, I did cross it.

So, once again my resolution is to get healthy and lose weight. Since to beginning of the year I’ve started reading food labels and eliminated added sugar. I couldn’t believe that even healthy things like whole wheat bread have added sugar. I’m now making my own meals from scratch and making a sourdough starter to bake my own bread. I’m also walking each day and shooting for 8,000 steps each day. My weight is slowly coming down. I have a long way to go to reach my ideal weight, but I know what I’m doing is well worth it.

So happy to read you have turned the page on your quest for health. I always tell people to read the labels on everything and kind of follow the Mediterranean type approach to eat.

Wheat and white flour and processed foods are major food items to cut back on as much as possible. Eight thousand steps daily is awesome. I attend gym classes and walk daily and set my walking goal at 5,000 steps minimum but I average 9 + depending on the day. My watch gives me a Blue sneaker award for reaching 5000 and is a great motivator as I have set hourly get up and move reminders.
Walking is very addictive and I started that before the pandemic.

I like gluten free products but read the label on them as they often contain more sugar than non gluten. I try to limit complex carbs to one a day. I don’t have a weight problem….my family is on the thin side but all women get the wheat belly so I watch that because it is noticeable on me.

A story…When I was working I drove past a beautiful waterfront area on the way where there were a lot of early walkers and joggers. Over the corse of about a year I saw a young overweight woman being dropped off with weights and she walked as best she could…don’t know the distance but you could see her struggle. The last few times I saw her she was half her size and I will never forget how her blonde ponytail flipped from side to side as she briskly walked and sprinted down the trail. I retired around then but felt so happy seeing her it made me teary.

All the exercise in the world doesn’t help if your diet is no good so they always go hand in hand. I can’t remember when I tasted real sourdough bread…yummy. I make most of my meals from scratch….easy to do….there are so many good spices out there. Kudos to you and you energy will increase triple fold. Keep those nasty food products out of your house and avoid temptation but don’t deprive yourself of enjoying your food. I read cookbooks all the time…my daughter has quite the collection. I have learned a lot about food and , at nearly 82, I feel the same as I do 10 plus years ago.

Yours is a happy post😃

Thank you for your encouragement! I am hoping that the changes I’ve made are going to be permanent. I will probably be on my medication for the rest of my life, so battling weight gain will be something I will be doing all my life. Finding a good strategy to lose excess weight and maintaining that loss is now my focus.

I’m very glad to hear how your journey to be healthy and active is something you can continue even as you age. I want to do the same!
