Diet after kidney transplant

Posted by hello1234 @hello1234, Jan 20, 2023

Hi all 😊
After your kidney transplant, are you following a special diet? Have you increased the protein in your diet or are you concerned that only one kidney is doing the job? When I had CKD, for years I followed a low protein diet including giving up milk and yogurt for rice milk, etc. Do you still follow a CKD diet after your kidney transplant?
Thanks everyone!

Hi,
Yes, just got my new kidney and new lease on life October 27. Sat in on a good training with a nutritionist at Mayo where they talked about eating a balanced diet, still less protein, sodium and fatty sugar filled foods and follow a Mediterranean eating plan. My wife and I actually started a Mediterranean eating plan five months before my transplant and I lost 34lbs and still at that weight. So it’s going good. Do miss eating a big juicy rare steak so often though but it’s worth the trade. Owe to my amazing donor to be the best transplant recipient I can be.

I find that I have pain several places including from an enlarged liver with cysts, so I slowly lose my appetite and lose weight still. I am told by docs to eat every 3 hours to gain weight, so am looking for meals I can buy to help. Any ideas on good healthy meals to buy online? Thank you, BB

Hi BB,

Sorry don’t know any online food items. We pressure can a lot of food and meals in a jar so we can control the amount of sodium and such. It gives us a great way to have good ready made meals on hand.

Salmon + Lentil / Broccoli soups + stir fried vegetables + Fruits (Bananas+Naval Oranges + Peach + Cantaloupe + Kiwi), Low GI brown rice. + No Sugar Period+ Decaf Coffee + Light Plain Yogurt. + Gluten free Pasta w home made tomato Sauce + Eggplant Parmigiana with Cottage Cheese.... that's pretty much what our diet is ! That's an easy answer: Celery+Red Onions+ Baby bella Mushroooms+Cabbage+Zuchini + Red and Green bell pepper & Cherry tomatoes , in a dash of extra virgin olive oil in which a tea spoon of cumin seeds initially heated in the oil, I do sprinkle key lime (at times those mushrooms are a bit hard to get..but its ok) ( salt added on top by individual )
