chronic diarrhea

Posted by cindymccallister @cindymccallister, Dec 5, 2012

I have had diarrhea up to 20 some times a day, every day for the past 5 years. I have been to two specialists along with my family doctor. I have had 2 colonoscopys and numerous blood tests. Everything appears to be normal. I have lost count of the various prescription medications they have tried on me. None of them has stopped the diarrhea, though some have slowed it down a bit.

I am going to yet another specialist tomorrow. So far, no one has ordered a stool sample or suggested allergy testing. I plan on bringing this up during my appointment tomorrow.

Is there anything else I can ask the doctor to try.

This problem is affecting every aspect of my life. I am missing work weekly and am afraid to leave the house for fear of needing a bathroom too quickly.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone else who has experienced this problem.

You could ask the doctor to order stool sample. Also, make notes on a daily basis. Write down what you eat and time of diarrhea. Track the frequency and the texture of your stool. See if certain foods make a difference. Present your own finding to the GI doctor. Feel well.

I too have had diarrhea for over 8 years now. It comes on about 15 minutes after eating, nothing seems to set it off just food. Have you had any surgical procedures? I ask because mine started after having a procedure done and hasn't stopped sense. I recently had a lung infection and was put on large does of a steroid, surprisingly the diarrhea stopped for almost two months, but now it's back.
Maybe mention that to your physician and see if possibly it could be a option for you. As you probably know there are side effects from steroids.
