Brain fog and forgetfulness

Posted by gastrogirl @gastrogirl, Dec 19, 2022

Just wondering if anyone else gets bad confusion when you are malnurished or fatigued. This only seems to happen when I am active or have a lot going on. Like visiting my baby grandson and calling him the wrong name over and over and not even noticing it until it upset my daughter. I say wrong things a lot and the more active or tired I am, the worse this gets. Is this happening to anyone else? If not, I will worry. I already mentioned this to my doc and all my labs look great.

I'm not a doctor, but severe dehydration can cause confusion, and not eating could lower your blood sugar. So, you should stay hydrated, drink throughout the day, and remember to eat. Nevertheless, since slight dehydration and hunger would not cause this symptom, I think you should also go to a gerontologist.

I do this sometimes but I also have other medical issues that contribute to this. I play games on my phone that help use your memory and thinking process. I wish you well.

I read an interesting article on here that if you can remember and be aware of forgetfulness then you are not suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s. So that’s a very good thing. I am always doing online and video games and also word puzzles. I am only in early 50's. I had this really bad at one point before I got diagnosed. But my labs and B12 were awful with pernicious anemia. I been great ever since until recent. Things is, my labs are perfect. So IDK. However I have been stressed and fatigued because of holidays.

I remember my family's names .. but actors, doctors and people I have little interaction with I have a hard time remember their names. I have a hard time remembering my words .. in the middle of saying something yesterday I left off the last two words of the sentence… my mind just went somewhere else for a sec or two. .. then back to the moment finished my sentence. I sometimes cannot think of a simple word. I don't eat or rest well. .. I have pernicious anemia and take a multi-vitamin and have a B12 shot monthly. My labs were fine earlier this year. Towards the low side of Vitamin d, but within range. I just had blood draw and urine sample again this week and we will see how they are at my appointment with doctor in January. My general practitioner has said it is lack of sleep that causes me to forget.

I unintentionally went off my PPI totally by mid Oct. I started vomiting in August .. no appointments available at Mayo Jax. Food was not staying down and I could see the PPI capsule floating in the commode. I tried opening the capsules and mixing with applesauce or water… the beads floated when vomiting. I talked my local gastro dr into doing the endoscopy and he found a small stricture and gastritis. So I just stuck with chewable Pepcid, generic Maalox and doing okay right now. He suggested I go to Emory gastro clinic. It may be no better getting an appointment there. I may call Mayo again in January.

After being off the PPI for a bit I am still searching for words, but not as much. So did it affect my memory… does the pain medication I take cause memory problems or even my asthma and allergy meds?

I also have a slight blockage of my right carotid artery. Does that affect memory? Probably. The lack of sleep too. I hurt a lot at night and am not one that takes naps in the daytime. Today I did for about 30 minutes. I haven't felt good today .. allergies I think but could be a cold or some other virus coming on.

Maybe look at your meds .. go over them with a pharmacist.. a doctor just prescribes drugs and knows very little about the drugs. With gastro problems you may need a different form of a drug .. chewable, liquid or injection.

If not drugs it could be natural with aging memory loss.

As always wishing you the best in life.

I have the pernicious anemia as well on top of autoimmune and other issues. This only happens when I am with company or busy. When resting at home I am fine. It is a relief to know your story. I am sorry it happens to you tho. Happy Holidays and take care.
