Mayo Pre Op: Has anyone had to do the 3 week liquid diet?

Posted by liver2007 @liver2007, Sep 5, 2022

Has anyone had to do the 3 week liquid diet? I am starting on Wed. I have everything I will need according to the list. I’m nervous and excited about my upcoming gastric bypass, but I’m doubting myself. I did not prepare as well as I should. Family emergencies and a sudden death in the family just threw me off track. Had to wait for 2 months for a open surgery date. I’m just having doubts and second thoughts. I Need this operation due to multiple medical problems. Help!

I have had anxiety and 2nd thoughts before any surgery I have had. I think that is normal. Sound like you have worked hard to get to this point, it is not a last minute decision.

One of the reasons there are classes and prep before gastric bypass is to make sure you are committed to life style changes.

I did not have to do liquid diet before my surgery, but that was over 10 years ago. Procedures have changed. It is good preparation to surgery and you will need to do so afterwards also.

Like any goal if you get off track, you just need to reset and restart immediately and not give up.

@liver2007, the liquid diet before surgery was extremely helpful. Not only does it shrink your liver and allow your surgical team to get where they need to go inside your body, but it also introduces you to ketosis (keto flu) and a full-on sugar and carb "detox" BEFORE surgery. You really don't want your body going through all that biochemical stuff after the surgery itself. The liquid diet will prime your body to work with the nutrition plan. Sending you all the best. You've got this. And don't forget that after surgery, you won't want to eat a thing, so the hard part is almost over!

I am doing the Mayo 3 week liquid diet. 4 shakes, 16oz of orange juice, 2 Liquid IVs. There are days I just can’t get the 4 th shake in. It’s also a lot of protein to take in 120g. I have kidney disease stage 3. I worry about the protein being too much for my kidneys to handle. Nutritionist says I need to drink all 4 or change to a renal diet eating food. In the diet the protein counts are all under 80 while 3 shakes is 90. I’m used to the liquid diet, almost 1/2 way through. Any suggestions?

Also new today, I feel exhausted and just want to sleep. Did this happen to any of you?

As always, Thank you for your input.

Could you cut the amount of OJ to get the 4th shake in? If that works could you take a supplement for the OJ difference? Or vice versa- if you aren’t able to get the 4th shake in take a protein supplement?
Or can something be added to your liquid IV to help with all of this ?
Just throwing out suggestions.

So just wondering what the list would be for the pre-op liquid diet that others have found useful and their go-to so that I’m prepared ahead of time.

Reach out to your surgeon / nurse. I am sure they have documentation on what you should be doing to prepare.
