Conflicting advice on exercise

Posted by sheilad1 @sheilad1, Dec 9, 2022

I was told exercise must be weight bearing and impact like walking dancing and marching in place. This says weight bearing but easy on the impact.

Is weight bearing but not impact ok? My knees would appreciate that.

Are these the exercises that help you?

Thank you! Much appreciated. As for exercise, I have been practicing yoga (I also teach it) for almost 20 years. I walk, hike mountains, do interval training, and garden. It was a big shock to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. If decided to try to manage it with calcium supplements, vitamin D and collagen for the next year to see if there are any improvements. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I thought I read in one of the earlier posts that jumping on a mini trampoline was helpful for osteoporosis??? My integrated medicine doctor suggested a body vibrator. Several years ago I was told wearing a weighted vest would help. Does anyone have any experience with any of these being helpful for their osteoporosis?

@ritatripp be careful! We don't know how severe your osteoporosis is.....I do tai chi and it helps and is gentle.

Another great resource is Sara Meeks,PT. She had been working with osteoporosis clients for 30+years. You can find some podcasts and exercise videos on YouTube. Also she sent me some information I use daily. She has osteoporosis herself, and greatly reduced her numbers with her exercises and Low Intensity Vibrations unit.
Also Loren Fishman has his 12 yoga exercises for osteoporosis which have shown to help. They are enjoyable and build such flexibility!
Free weights are helpful if you can.. need real help with this because form is essential.

High intensity vibration exercisers pose risks to those with osteoporosis. I stopped using mine after 9 months. Also, I've heard warnings from Sara Meeks that weighted vests can cause vertebral fractures. For guidance on safe exercises for osteoporosis, check out Margaret Martin at MelioGuide and Dr. Loren Fishman, 12 Poses vs Osteoporosis,, and also Sara meeks. All can be Googled. Take care.
